AppliedMicro – Delivers Unique Capabilities For Modern Data Centers

Listen to this article

AppliedMicro’s solutions are tailored to provide computing and connectivity solutions for next-generation cloud infrastructure and data centers. AppliedMicro’s X-Gene server processor was the first 64-bit ARM processor on the market with production release in 2014. AppliedMicro solutions dramatically lower the cost of ownership (TCO). Below is our interview with John Williams, Vice President of Marketing and Product Management at AppliedMicro:

John-Williams

Q: John, tell us more about your recent partnership with Vapor IO. How is AppliedMicro powering its data center controller technology?

A: AppliedMicro’s HeliX 2 quad-core integrated 64-bit ARM processor is powering Vapor IO’s Vapor Edge Controller (VEC), an Edge Zone Controller superseding traditional “top-of-rack” controllers by managing a dense physical and logical compute zone within the data center. The quad-core HeliX 2, which runs up to 2 GHz, integrates multiple high speed interfaces and hardware accelerators, including six lanes of PCIe 3.0, one lane of SATA 3.0, three USB 3.0 ports and a memory controller. The consolidation of the management functionality of a large number of rack server BMC devices into a single, unified rack-level solution requires strong compute capability balanced with integration and power-efficiency. The HeliX 2 processor offers an excellent combination for this application.

Q: What advantage does AppliedMicro have over its competitors?

A: AppliedMicro’s HeliX 2 delivers on the unique capabilities required by modern data centers, and that’s a leading factor in Vapor IO’s decision to partner with us. Those capabilities include high performance, low power consumption, a small form factor and an integrated 64-bit memory controller. Vapor IO has taken advantage of the performance of the HeliX 2 processor to replace a large number of BMC devices within a rack with a disaggregated solution, reducing cost and complexity while increasing overall reliability and telemetry. AppliedMicro’s HeliX 2 processor was the first 64-bit ARM embedded solution offering a time-to-market advantage. Additionally, AppliedMicro’s X-Gene server processor was the first 64-bit ARM processor on the market with production release in 2014. The ARM v8 software compatibility between the X-Gene server processors and the HeliX embedded processors offered the opportunity to do early software development on a production-quality product.

Q: AppliedMicro delivers silicon solutions that dramatically lower total cost of ownership; Can you give us more insights?

A: AppliedMicro’s solutions are tailored to provide computing and connectivity solutions for next-generation cloud infrastructure and data centers. One of the driving factors leading data center decision making is TCO. AppliedMicro’s flagship X-Gene, the world’s first ARM 64-bit Server-on-a-Chip solution, features our enterprise class high performance Cloud Processor cores coupled with switch fabric and high-speed networking capabilities. Combined, they deliver substantially lower power consumption and substantial TCO savings. Representing the high end of all ARM processors, HeliX delivers CPU performance that provides the next level of performance in power-constrained embedded applications. It’s power saving design delivers CPU performance for power-constrained embedded applications, offering considerable TCO savings. While the X-Gene server processors can directly lower TCO via high performance balanced with power efficiency and cost-effectiveness, the HeliX processor in the Vapor IO application provides the right combination of performance, integration and power-efficiency to enable Vapor IO to build a platform offering significant TCO reduction with a new approach to data center rack management.

Q: What can we expect from AppliedMicro in next six months?

A: X-Gene is continuing to gain momentum with more end customers and is a clear leader in the ARM server space. That said, we’re also seeing great progress with X-Gene 2, which is in active evaluations with a number of key end customers. HeliX remains the leading choice for high-volume enterprise networking equipment vendors as they move from MIPS and PowerPC to 64-bit ARM. AppliedMicro is enthusiastic about our opportunities in the embedded market as we leverage our existing IP and investments in 64-bit ARM to serve embedded applications.
