Astoria Software: Socially Responsible Solutions For Content Curation And Delivery

Listen to this article

Astoria Software has been on a tear recently. In 2015 the company was selected by KMWorld and eContent to their respective lists of top market-leading companies. Its customers have held webinars describing the many advantages they’ve received by adopting the Astoria platform for creating, managing and distributing content to end-users. Global organizations rely on Astoria to deliver correct content that can save lives. Below is our interview with Michael Rosinski, President and CEO of one of the world’s most successful Enterprise Solutions for XML Component Content Management.

Michael Rosinski - Astoria

Q: Michael, great to have you as a guest. Please tell us a little bit about your software technology and service offering.

A: The elevator pitch for Astoria Software is that it is a must-have, not a nice-to-have, component content management solution for any company that has complex products that require technical product documentation, internally for operations and maintenance and externally for the customer to use.

Q: Can you give us some examples of industries that require technical documentation?

A: Our qualification acronym that we use is called the three Vs: High volume, high velocity, and high variability of technical product documentation. It refers to the volume of documentation, the number of times the documentation is changed, and the complexity of the documentation itself, for example, software vendors, such as Cisco, Micron and Oracle, as well as pharmaceutical medical device companies, like GE Healthcare and Siemens Healthcare. Really any discrete manufacturing company is a potential user. We have a strong customer base in aerospace with such companies as Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin.

Q: What is the competitive edge that makes your company dominant in the component content management marketplace?

A: We have both large and small competitors around the world, and there is always a start-up that will emerge and produce a feature du jour of the moment. The advantage for Astoria is that it was founded in the high tech capital of the world, Silicon Valley, which values innovation and staying power. Astoria, under my direction, has taken the lead in three of the most important current technology trends: SaaS (software as a service), mobility, and portal. In fact, if you are trying to sell software in Silicon Valley, California, all doors will be slammed shut by the venture capitalists if your solution does not encompass these application functionality vehicles.

Q: How does having the SaaS/On-Demand model give you a competitive advantage?

A: I’m proud to say that we spearheaded the SaaS movement and were the first to market this application in the component content management segment, just as another tech titan Mark Benioff of SalesForce.com was captain of industry for SaaS CRM. Our SaaS solution is truly developed and scaled for the enterprise, processing unlimited amounts of data, worldwide multilanguage coverage and turnkey operation for CIOs and CTOs. We provide all components: Hardware, software, peripherals, training, all-inclusive in one price.

Q: What else can you tell us about Astoria that makes it a unique offering?

A: Astoria had been funded by Goldman Sachs and other top venture capitalists in Silicon Valley, but there came a time when we wanted to expand our product offering and geographical footprint. I selected TransPerfect, the largest private translation company in the world, as a merger partner. TransPerfect revenues are targeted at nearly a half a billion this year with a large infrastructure of worldwide offices and distribution channels that complement our offering. From a product perspective, TransPerfect completed our vision of offering a complete content supply chain, one that incorporates content creation, a content repository, multiple distribution and delivery channels, quality, and translation technology services.

Q: Do you view your company’s products as socially responsible?

A: Well, definitely, we help medical patients by producing appropriate documentation for doctors to operate MRI and cardiology machines, for correct labeling of drugs in all languages that need FDA approval, and for categorizing blood samples correctly for the largest blood bank inventory in the world. We also produce digital flight operations manuals that are essential to commercial and military aviation and which save fuel by eliminating hundreds of pounds of printed material that would otherwise occupy space in an airplane.
