Below is our interview with Geoff Lyons, CEO & CTO of CoolIT Systems:

SP1212-ASa (3).jpgQ: CoolIT Systems is focused on developing a full range of large scale data center cooling solutions; tell us something more about the company and its mission?

A: As specialists in direct contact liquid cooling, the industry is turning to CoolIT Systems to help datacenter’s take advantage of the benefits that liquid cooling has to offer. A few big factors are driving this adoption like the dramatic increase in data demand that mobile devices and streaming video are creating. All that data is served up from datacenters everywhere. The electrical power that datacenters are now consuming is now topping 3% of all power generated in the United States. By utilizing liquid cooling, those datacenters can reduce and sometimes eliminate air conditioning costs which typically represent 30 – 40% of their operational expenses. In short, liquid cooling has always been a more efficient way of moving heat, CoolIT’s mission is to deliver solutions that allow datacenters to easily realize those benefits in a simple and reliable way.

Q: What are the main benefits of liquid cooling?

A: The big advantage of liquid cooling is derived from water’s ability to transport large amounts of heat with very little flow. By comparison, to keep a high powered CPU cool using air cooling, you need to move a large amount of air cooled by an air conditioner with power hungry fans while a a liquid cooled CPU would require a small flow of warm water moved by an energy efficient pump. These benefits can enable higher powered processors to increase performance, reduce power consumption and dramatically increase the power density to reduce the physical size of the datacenter.

Q: Could you explain the function and advantages of CoolIT Systems DCLC™ technology compared to other available cooling technologies?

A: CoolIT Systems is one of a handful of companies that offer direct contact liquid cooling (DCLC). The advantage that CoolIT brings to bear is the modularity of the solution. CoolIT has created practical liquid cooling “Building blocks” that allow highly specialized solutions to be quickly integrated in a very reliable and cost efficient way. By sticking to this philosophy, we can deliver efficient, scalable solutions for smaller systems of just a rack or two, right up to a multi-megawatt datacenter. There are other approaches to liquid cooling like immersion and, while I think there is a lot of merit to immersion, it requires the datacenter to dramatically change the way they operate.

Q: Who is your ideal customer and why?

A: Right now, I think the customer that gets the biggest benefit from our solution are those within the HPC market. When a customer needs to put together a high performance cluster, our liquid cooling systems can enable a 5-6 rack set-up of 8-10kWs each to be compressed into 2-3 racks and dramatically reduce the floor space and air cooling requirements at the same time.

Q: What can we expect from CoolIT in next six months? What are your plans?

A: We are extremely busy right now with projects that will become public in Q2 and a few more at the end of the year. We’re organizing 6-8 installations right now with a few very large scale projects in the bidding process. The tipping point for liquid cooling is happening right now behind the scenes, it will feel very much like the industry has made a sudden migration to liquid cooling a year from now. For now, our efforts are to keep up with the multitude of projects that are coming our way. The phone is ringing off the hook – it’s a good time to be the world leader for liquid cooling solutions!
