DB Networks And CyberArk Partner On Industry’s First Artificial Intelligence-Based Agentless Database Activity Monitor

Listen to this article

Founded in 2009, DB Networks pioneered artificial intelligence based database security. Their customers include the world’s largest financial institutions, healthcare providers, manufacturers, and governments. DB Networks non-intrusively discovers all databases, tables being accessed, and the applications accessing the databases. Patented machine learning and behavioral analysis technologies are used to immediately identify compromised credentials and database attacks. We sat down with Brett Helm, CEO at DB Networks to learn more about the company and its innovative technologies:

Brett Helm

Q: Brett, could you share with our readers more details on your recently announced Agentless Database Activity Monitor.

A: Sure, absolutely. Previously database activity monitoring has been extremely expensive, labor intense, and required that software agents be installed on all systems being monitored. The primary problem is that those software agents can and do fail, often taking the entire database down with them. In other cases the agents fail and simply stop monitoring until someone notices that months of audit logs were never collected.

We architected a solution for database activity monitoring that isn’t based on agents. Instead we non-intrusively capture database communications from the network and apply deep protocol inspection to understand what’s occurring in the database infrastructure. DB Networks partnered with CyberArk to bring the industry’s first artificial intelligence based agentless DAM to market. So essentially the solution is the combination of DB Networks machine learning database security appliance, DBN-6300, with privileged account activity monitoring technology from CyberArk. This enables far better protection from database attacks and insider threats while also significantly simplifying compliance requirements.

Q: Could you explain the advantages of the agentless DAM over traditional DAMs?

A: As I said, the agentless DAM captures and analyzes database communications non-intrusively. That capability is extremely important. Being non-intrusive means it’s not possible for the agentless DAM to interfere with the operations of the database in any way. The agentless DAM security capabilities are based on artificial intelligence, specifically machine learning and behavioral analysis, that immediately identify compromised credentials and database attacks. Artificial intelligence ensures the threat detection accuracy is extremely high and the operational support is minimal. There’s no white lists / black lists or signature files to install or maintain. Being highly accurate also reduces operational support because security staff won’t be constantly chasing down alerts that turn out to be false positive alerts. So as you can see, the agentless DAM not only supports compliance requirements but also offers an unprecedented level of database security.

Q: You mentioned DB Networks partnered with CyberArk, could you elaborate on that partnership and what the partnership means to the agentless DAM?

A: Yes, CyberArk brings privileged user monitoring to the agentless DAM. In fact, CyberArk is the premier provider of privileged account management products. Their solution is critical for database security and also satisfies the well-established compliance requirement of monitoring database administrators. The CyberArk Privileged Account Security Solution establishes a single point of control for privileged sessions and creates an indexed, tamper-resistant record of privileged sessions. With the CyberArk solution, organizations can easily isolate, monitor, record and control privileged sessions on databases. This allows security teams to immediately terminate suspicious privileged sessions and have an audit with full video playback of specific user sessions.

DB Networks is also a member of CyberArk’s C3 Alliance global technology partner program. The C3 Alliance brings together enterprise software, IT security and service providers to build on the power of privileged account security to better protect customers from cyber threats.

Q: What would you say attracts users to the agentless DAM and what are some of the key challenges you enable them to solve?

A: DAMs in general are often used as a compensating control for compliance. For example, DAMs support Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance to improve the accuracy of financial reports, Payment Card Industry’s Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) for monitoring access to credit card-related information, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements for monitoring access to sensitive healthcare records. So clearly organizations that need to comply with those regulations must implement solutions to monitor database activity and our agentless DAM will find opportunities there.

The agentless DAM is certainly poised to expand the overall market for database monitoring due to it’s significantly reduced cost, ease of use, and use of artificial intelligence for insider threat detection and database security capabilities.

Q: How does the future look for DB Networks?

A: I’m extremely excited about our future. Over the last several years we’ve been rapidly expanding our sales and revenue. We closed 2016 very strong and I thank our entire team for that, they truly stepped up. It’s always a challenge during this time of rapid expansion. We’re executing on both our near term and long term roadmaps. As we expand our customer base, these customers bring new requirements to us that must be accommodated. We continue to staff up to meet the demand. It’s truly and exciting time for DB Networks and the entire cyber security industry.
