Below is our interview with Jake Neuberg, Co-Founder of Revolution Prep:
Q: Jake, you’ve recently announced $4M in Series B Round; could you tell us something more?
A: We are excited to work again with Kennet Partners as well as new board members Jeffrey Cohen and Scott Kirkpatrick, who are both veterans in the field, on this announcement. Cohen is CEO of Catapult Learning who previously served as the president and CEO of Sylvan Learning – one of the nation’s largest learning center operators. Kirkpatrick is the current president of General Assembly, and previously served as president of Princeton Review, an early leader in the test prep field.
The new funding and board members and investors show that industry insiders, and leading LA tech entrepreneurs, recognize that Revolution Prep is a real leader in the educational technology world. Revolution Prep’s services are now fully online and we have developed several innovative new programs, including our recently launched Revolution Math, a brand new way for students in grades 2-5 to develop a love of math. It incorporates effective learning research such as storytelling, games, small class size and social interaction to engage students with an exceptional instructor. We also recently released a new service called Semi-Private Tutoring exclusively for students preparing for the SAT or ACT.

Q: How would you describe Revolution Prep in your own words?
A: Revolution’s goal is to help students be more successful in school, on high stakes tests, and to increase their love of learning, while lowering their stress. Our programs are based on leading academic research such as Growth Mindset, and we take a holistic approach. We don’t just offer kids test taking tricks or help with their homework assignments, we teach them how to learn and how to test. Revolution Prep also has a social mission and in 15 years we have never turned anyone away due to their inability to pay for our programs.
Q: How exactly does your technology help students?
A: Our platform is very unique and highly interactive – we are constantly improving to fit the needs of today’s students. For example, Revolution Math brings students into an online immersive world which makes them feel like they are going on an adventure… but they are really developing a love of math. Our tutoring sessions take a very different approach than traditional sessions sitting next to a child at their desk with pen and paper. Our system allows the instructor to see the shared whiteboard that the student is using while also looking at their facial expressions – this helps determine the direction of the lesson. These students have grown up using technology so they love the programs and feel comfortable using this medium.

A: Truthfully it’s really not online vs. offline because online tutoring not done right can be harmful too. Revolution Prep knows how to do online tutoring right based on the program we developed over the past 15 years with thousands of students. There are 4 reasons why our program is so successful:
#1 Our Instructors – across the board most other tutors work 3-5 hrs a week, our tutors are all full time employees so we invest hundreds of hours to training them and in turn they develop hundreds of hours of experience. This is a career.
#2 Scheduling – it might sound simple but today¹s kids are really busy and have a lot going on, scheduling consistently with the same tutor can be challenging in person, with online tutoring, scheduling is much easier and can be done when the student is traveling.
#3 Our Tools – these are unique to our platform and online programs and can make learning much more efficient and effective. For example, tutors can both watch what the student is doing on the shared whiteboard and look at their face — which is hard to do at the desk in person.
#4 Quality Control – parents are kept in the loop via weekly video updates. In addition, our management team views the majority of the tutoring so they can assess the quality of the sessions.
Q: What is your plan for the future?
A: Revolution Prep is currently growing consistently between 50-100% each year and our goal is to continue to bring our services to more and more students here in the US and worldwide. We are always looking to innovate and improve our products and are excited to continue the momentum.
