Powered Now Helps Tradesmen Get Their Paperwork Together

Powered Now is aiming to revolutionize the construction industry. That sounds like a big vision, and it is.

Back in 2011 my fellow founder Chris Barling and I were looking at what to do in our next business. We had been working together in eCommerce software for some years, and we wanted a new challenge. It seemed to us that the field trade industry (plumbers, electricians, builders, landscapers etc.) had huge potential.

On the one hand it was probably the least computerized sector in the world; the participants (we found out by extensive interviewing) absolutely hated paperwork yet they were generally doing it all manually.

On the other hand, the rise of mobile computing meant that new connected devices were easier to use, cheaper and had better functionality and connectivity than ever before. Something clicked for us, after all field trade businesses are by definition mobile.

Coupled with this, we discovered that the common caricature of tradesmen is just that, a caricature. Our research told us that the reality of their situation is much more complicated. Tradesmen are naturally far better with their hands than with administration, but the ones running their own companies are no different from anyone else running their own company – smart, motivated and hard working.

The idea is born!

So the idea of Powered Now was born, to use the mobile revolution to help these guys. Since then we have been assembling a world-class team to turn that vision into reality.

So far we have developed a product which allows trade businesses to plan their work-day, capture customer details and get their requirements for jobs, produce estimates and quotations, raise invoices and take card payments, all directly from an iPhone or iPad.

In the summer of 2014 we raised over £585,000 on Crowdcube (the biggest equity crowd sourcing platform in the world) to further develop and market the product.

We have won a number of awards including the Microsoft Bizspark best mobile app, Crowdcube Start Up of the Year and two years running we have been on the Startups 100 list of innovative young businesses.

To date over 15,000 businesses have registered to use our app, both within the UK and worldwide, and many have become paying subscribers. Over time more and more people are taking the decision to make Powered Now central to their business.

At the end of the day, however, what actually matters is delivering benefits to our customers. In fact, it’s the only important thing as if you don’t, you won’t have a business for long. So probably the single thing that we are most proud of is that when we surveyed our customers, they produced a great list of benefits that their businesses were already gaining by using Powered Now.

What next?

Where do we go from here? There’s much more development to do with our product and the potential market is vast, with nearly a million trade businesses in the UK. However, we already have a decent chunk of our paying subscribers in the US, so the potential definitely isn’t just at home.

Overall, it’s been fun even if it has been incredibly hard work. We know from previous experience that building a business from scratch isn’t easy, and we all make mistakes. However, not many people get the sort of opportunity that we are currently looking at, and we regard it as a privilege.

Q: Could you explain the function and advantages of Rently Keyless’ smart home technology platform?

A: Absoluteley! Rently Keyless is the most advanced smart home technology on the market. We classify our smart home as an enterprise smart home, as it specifically caters to clientele who have large rental property portfolios that they would like to control. Unike a lot of smart homes, our technology does not connect to the internet via wi-fi. Our Tr-Band hub (which we built ourselves!) can connect to a property via cellular, wi-fi and ethernet to ensure superior uptime. Additionally, we have a enterprise portal where managers can control all of their smart homes, as well as a renter app.

Q: You’ve recently re-launched your website; tell us something more?

A: Our website relaunch signifies our commitment to communicate the advantages our smart home technology brings to three specific verticals; vacation rentals, single family and multi-family homes. Our new website should help decision makers get a comprehensive understand of our offerings and how it Rently Keyless can benefit managers and renters.

Q: What geographic markets are you focusing on currently?

A: Our technology focuses on servicing the North American vacation rental, single family and multi-family operators.

Q: What can we expect form you in next 12 months?

A: A lot! We have recently announced integration with Amazon Alexa, allowing managers and renters to control lighting, monitoring and thermostats via voice command. Smart home technology is constantly growing, and we have over 1800 devices we can integrate with our platform…so you should be seeing some amazing things going forward.

Q: What’s the best thing about Rently Keyless that people might not know about?

A: We are the only smart home on the market that can perform a self-showing…meaning if a property manager uses our smart home technology on a property, it can act as a leasing agent and issue unique codes to every renter as well as capture lead information.

Q: How would you describe JKL Web Technologies in your own words?

A: We are a partnership of great friends who happened to be at the right place at the right time. The right place was Sanchez Computer Associates in Malvern, Pennsylvania and the right time was in the mid nineties, the start of online banking. SCA had a real-time banking engine named Profile which started getting traction among the top-tier banks like, GMAC, ING, Citibank, and there were many, many more. The problem was, we all had banking software coursing through our veins but we didn’t know the online world; we were losing money to third party vendors who were building these online sites for our customers. So we all dove into the deep-end of this online pool and it became sink or swim. Not only did we swim, we floated to the top and became leaders in our fields. Each of us followed their own light, some went on to be designers and architects, others became connectivity and security experts. The next thing we know we are helping to build sites for Ally, Allstate, eTrade, Metlife, and there were many, many more. We helped to build the online banking world and, while we were at it, helped them build their call center world as well.

Q: Can you give us more insights into your services?

A: Our services grew out of a need we saw while we were all working for a Fortune 500 company who had purchased Sanchez Computers Associates. The top-tier fintech leaders were once again hiring third party vendors but not to build the online world but to test it. They would hire security experts to scan and perform penetration tests on our code. Once the tests were completed the security experts would hand their report to us and we would improve the code base. Then someone wanted a usability test and again third party vendors would run their test and hand us their reports and again we would improve the code base. The same happened for performance and accessibility. That was the light bulb moment – combining services.

Q: What advantage does JKL Web Technologies have over its competitors?

A: Combing services has its advantages. The first being a one-stop shop, so to speak. Why waste your time and effort trying to find companies to do a stress test and then one for a usability study for your new functionality, when you can have one partner giving you one all-encompassing report, then consult you through the best approach. Now, not only do you save time, but most importantly – money. JKL Web Technologies becomes more like the Geico of web services, the more you bundle, the more you save and to top if off, there are less hands in the cookie jar. With less hands, security measures are simplified and faster delivery times can be expected across the board. Plus when we create or redesign a site, we take all of our services into mind. Q: What is the motto that guides your decisions?

A: It’s the one voice in the back of any great programmer’s mind – follow the standards. Sure we all tend to march to the beat of our own drum and put a unique spin on things but you have to remember standards are here for a reason. The standards not only guide us, they justify good design from bad. They help others view your code, communicate with your code, and to help understand your code. When you have a lot of hands in that proverbial cookie jar you have problems in viewing, communicating, and understanding. In order to alleviate those problems, you would just have to follow the common thread of standardization. The common thread isn’t simple to follow if there are many voices in your head telling you what’s wrong with your code base. JKL Web Technologies is a holistic approach to your online needs and will be that voice of reason throughout your development life cycle instilling the standards along the way.

Q: What can we expect from JKL Web Technologies in next six months?

A: You can expect us to be on a growth spurt and not looking back. We will add new services as the market dictates and continue to evolve. We will be partnering with companies who will provide needed resources and expertise so we can maintain our holistic approach – that one-stop shop so to speak for global banking, insurance, trading, eCommerce, and the entertainment industry.

FlyEx Aims To Eliminate All The Hassles Of Travel Booking

FlyEx is the first of its kind customizable and on-demand peer to peer travel booking and travel chat platform that offers its users access to a vast amount of discounted flight and hotel fares. The platform is designed to help its users find the best deals while providing 24/7 support through the app’s travel chat. To find out more about their platform we sat down with Miguel Martinez, Social Media and Marketing Manager at FlyEx:

Q: How would you describe FlyEx in your own words?

A: FlyEx is the first Peer to Peer travel booking app. It gives travelers access to low, unpublished fares while pairing them with a travel expert known as an Aviator who’s there to help with any travel questions the traveler may have. The traveler can also choose his or her own Aviator by using a unique Aviator code during registration.

Q: What’s FlyEx’s story? How did FlyEx start?

A: FlyEx was conceptualized by travel industry veterans. They realized that the transportation and accommodation industry was evolving, but the flight industry remained the same and was outdated. Similarly like AirBnB and Uber have transformed their respective industries, FlyEx is working on the evolution of travel booking.

Q: What makes FlyEx a good choice?

A: When booking travel, the average person clicks on dozens of links and redirects before feeling confident enough to make a booking. FlyEx eliminates all that. Similar to what a traditional travel agent used to do for travelers, FlyEx gives people access to an Aviator who can help them plan the correct flight at the correct price. For example, a traveler can message their Aviator through the app’s Travel Chat and tell him or her they have a budget of $600 and they want to go somewhere warm for the summer. The Aviator can then offer recommendations on flight itineraries and hotels. The Aviator even has the ability to reduce the price of the already low airfare prices. On top of all this, FlyEx is confident that they will offer travelers the lowest prices anywhere that they guarantee it with a feature in the app called “Beat Zone” which simply allows travelers who find a cheaper fare somewhere else to upload a screenshot to FlyEx for a better deal on that same flight.

Q: What kinds of feedback are you getting from users?

A: Given that the app is still fairly new, there is some room for improvement, particularly in the UI and look and feel of the app. But, the bottom line is that FlyEx delivers on the lowest prices when compared to other sites like Expedia, Kayak and Google flights, etc. Obviously travelers love this. We already have travelers who come back to the FlyEx app to buy all their travel booking.

Q: FlyEx combines Artificial Intelligence, travel industry partnerships and the power of the sharing economy; what are your plans for keeping FlyEx on the forefront of technology innovation?

A: FlyEx empowers people to take control. Whether they’re making money as an Aviator or they’re saving money as a Traveler and it’s important for us to understand that this is the evolution of travel booking. As such, we have to be fluid enough to change and accommodate to the needs and trends that happen naturally in an industry.

Q: What is unique about Cloudticity and how does it stand out from competition?

A: Cloudticity helps healthcare companies design, build, migrate, and manage HIPAA-compliant systems on Amazon Web Services. We are an AWS Advanced Partner, audited Managed Services Provider, and hold the AWS Healthcare and DevOps competencies (all of these designations require annual third-party audit validation). Those stacks are part of Cloudticity Oxygen™, our HIPAA-specific managed services platform, built as an AWS-native solution from the ground up.

Q: What are your plans for next four months?

A: We just wrapped up our HITRUST audit this week, then we’ll pursue the AWS Migration Competency followed by our annual AWS Managed Services Provider audit at the end of May. We’re excited to be adding machine learning and automated anomaly detection to Cloudticity Oxygen, and to continue building a richer set of HIPAA guardrails based on NSA/DOD STIGS. And that’s just this month! We’ll continue to grow, adding new customers and team members, deepening our relationship with AWS, and helping move the state of global healthcare forward.

Q: What are the main challenges of developing HIPAA-compliant applications on Amazon Web Services right now?

A: Amazon Web Services is an awesome place to host HIPAA-compliant applications – it’s incredibly secure, highly available, exceptionally performant, while still allowing strong cost controls. We help customers address challenges around optimal architecture, meeting regulatory compliance requirements, implementing strong governance systems, avoiding downtime, and fixing problems when they arise. 3dNinja Launches New Search Engine For 3D Printable Models

3dNinja offers the widest range of 3D printers for every possible application. 3dNinja has had the largest customer base so far ranging from consumers, hobbyists, schools to real estate agents. Below is our recent interview with Nikolai Leuveld, Co-Founder of 3dNinja:

Q: Tell us something more about the company and your products?

A: 3D Ninja has been in the 3D printing industry for quite some time now, we are the largest reseller of 3D printers in The Netherlands and we sell almost every popular desktop 3D brand. We have a team of highly dedicated 3D printer experts, a very committed IT staff but we also have 3D printer mechanics. Good service is our number one priority. We sell to companies, small and large. To agencies, governments but also to consumers.

Q: You’ve recently launched the beta version of your new search engine for 3D printable models; tell us something more?

A: Yes that is correct, the focus for this project is purely consumer based. 3D printers are getting more affordable by the month and great quality consumer printers already start as low as 300 USD, this made the consumer market explode over the last year. Unfortunately not every consumer can work with CAD / 3D model software making them rely on 3D printable models that can be found online. It’s quite hard to find quality designs because although there are a lot of libraries out there it is a lot of work to search them all. You can compare it with the beginning days of the internet before the time of the great search engines, looking for quality content was like finding a needle in a haystack. This is the reason why we started working on iFind3D, one easy to use search engine that has a index of all the 3D printable designs out there.

When we started the project about one and a half year ago the goal was to build this purely as a extra service for our own customers but things got a little out of hand from there on.
The interest for this project was huge and we started getting mails and phone calls daily, so we decided to clear a larger budget, assign more staff and from there on things got a different approach.

Q: How does IFind3D work? What is under the hood?

A: IFind3D is finally in beta after one and a half year, the reason why this has taken so long is because the tech behind it is quite complicated. Not only does the infrastructure be able to process high numbers of data, we also needed to create multiple algorithms to make sure data is being processed the right way. For example we connect with IBM’s supercomputer ‘Watson’ via a third party integration so we make sure data process structuring is self learning. Our search algorithm uses almost 100 different variables to provide the best results to every user.

Q: What advantage does 3D Ninja have over its competitors?

A: Well, quite a few. We are the only one that offers 100% 3D printable designs, the only one that uses algorithms but we believe that we are also the only one the can easily scale without problems. 3D printing is starting to get more popular by the day and the amount of designs that are uploaded to the internet grows with the minute. You need to have some serious hardware to keep up, as well as a good and solid infrastructure.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: A lot still needs to be done and that is also what this beta is for. We indexed about 60% of all 3D printable designs out there, before the end of the year our goal is to index 90% of all worldwide designs.

It will not stop there and also before the end of the year we will integrate a ton of great features to make sure we keep on top of the current market and give our users the best experience possible.

Q: What can you do for startups?

A: Skyview Capital Ventures partners with entrepreneurs building disruptive business models. We provide both capital and operational scaling assistance. This includes introductions to our network of strategic partners, additional equity and debt providers, and other business advisors. We are very active in the Los Angeles startup ecosystem, having participated in startup events at Caltech, Pomona College, USC, UCLA this quarter.

Q: How does Skyview Capital Ventures differ from other venture firms?

A: We have a bench of operators who can assist with legal, supply chain, sales, business development, and corporate finance advice. We also are able to invest across the capital structure throughout a startup’s life cycle. We are also able to evaluate and invest in deals very quickly using in-house resources.

Q: What are Skyview’s investment criteria and what target areas are the most interest to you?

A: We are primarily interested in companies that show some early customer and revenue traction in the sectors of technology, telecom, software, digital media, and biotechnology. We have had successful exits in cloud-based enterprise software, autonomous vehicles, EdTech, and mobile messaging, so we have industry knowledge and contacts that can be leveraged with our portfolio companies. Some key items that we look for include a large addressable market, a strong founding team, defensible intellectual property, interesting technology, and an ability for Skyview to provide an operational value-add. We currently see a lot of interesting businesses in the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and cloud-based services.

Q: At what stage does Skyview invest?

A: Skyview Capital Ventures primarily invests in Seed through C-rounds.

Q: Do you have any particular advice for startups planning to raise capital?

A: Companies raising venture capital should start early and be realistic on valuation. Startups should also take slightly more than they think they need today to provide some additional cushion if the business plan changes. They should also be more focused today on a path to profitability. Entrepreneurs should also consider the value that their investors bring to the table in addition to the cash. We also recommend that startups look for additional non-dilutive sources of initial funding including government research grants, crowd-funding, and venture debt.

Q: You’ve recently announced opening of two new offices in Strongsville and Cherry Hill; tell us something more about your expansion plans.

A: Well first, we can say that we are very pleased to be able to touch the lives of aspiring models and actors in both the Strongsville (Cleveland, Ohio) and Cherry Hill (South Jersey, New Jersey) offices. The rest of the expansion plan is to open at least three more offices by the end of 2017, eight more in 2018 and then eight more in 2019. Q: What’s the achievement you are most proud of?

A: Being considered an expert on successfully translating and supporting companies’ business transformations into the physical workspace. For each client, we develop specific designs that work to support their goals – whether that is a more agile workforce, or a shift in their core business. Our US team, for instance, is not just working with Blackstone on their new Innovations and Infrastructure project (Bxii) in Manhattan, but also just finished Prodigious’ new workplace in Industry City in Brooklyn, and a great tech project in San Francisco for New Relic.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: We have some exciting transformational projects ahead of us! We are working with a global financial client on a project that features an iconic integrated technology façade that will introduce unique data content in one of the most highly trafficked corners in the world, adding to the new architectural journey in Manhattan.

Using advanced tools, co-created with InSiteVR, the project uses their latest VR feature for its platform, Analytics — a tool that allows designers to replay and analyze a walk-through to learn more about user behavior. It also includes heat map functionality that further provides data on the distribution of users’ attention while interacting with the design. This leads to more informed design decision making and end user approvals that are subjective.

Adeptia connect is designed to help even non-technical users make data connections, increase revenue and cut operational costs. Below is our interview with Deepak Singh, CTO at Adeptia:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to Adeptia?

A: Adeptia is a software company that provides a business application to manage partner data exchange. Our B2B integration software helps companies to more easily and quickly exchange business information with their customers and partners. We believe business users should be able to access information anywhere, anytime by creating data connections themselves, and our mission is to enable that self-service capability. Adeptia has been in business since 2000, and we are headquartered in Chicago. We have over 450 customers that range from mid-sized businesses to large Fortune 500 organizations.

Q: How does Adeptia technology help your customers?

A: Adeptia helps its customers by enabling them to grow revenue faster and also reduce costs efficiently. On average, it takes an enterprise service provider many weeks to onboard new customers’ data. That means they are waiting many weeks before they can deliver services or earn revenue from new accounts. Our technology enables enterprises to accelerate customer data on-boarding and thus fast forward revenue, from months to a matter of minutes.

Our technology also allows organizations to start their customer relationships off right by empowering business users to perform B2B integration operations and make on-boarding easy, fast, and secure. We help companies reduce time, effort, and skill-set required to do B2B operations and save money by simplifying management of all data exchanges from a central place.

Q: You’ve recently announced that Adeptia Suite has achieved SAP certified integration with the SAP NetWeaver technology platform; tell us something more?

A: SAP is a leading Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) application that is used by thousands of companies all over the world to run their business. Getting business data into and out of SAP is a requirement for every company and Adeptia software product makes that possible in a reliable and secure way. Purchase orders, invoices, shipping information, inventory data, pricing, etc. are some business data types that needs to be sent into or received from the SAP application in an easy and seamless way. SAP tests software products that enable integration between SAP and other applications and it has a well-defined certification process. Adeptia software passed all the certification tests to win this coveted credential from SAP.

Q: What are the main challenges of developing B2B integration solutions right now?

A: There are a number of challenges related to developing B2B integration solutions: Each connection is difficult and takes a long time to set up. Setting up data connections with external companies is very time consuming and difficult as it takes multiple meetings, calls, document exchanges, and testing rounds to implement. Typically, it takes 6-12 weeks to setup connections with each company. This has business impact as delayed revenue from new customers until they are onboard, thus giving a perception of hard to do business with.

Another challenge is the need of highly skilled developers. The typical approach is to have business users send requests to I.T. Staff to create new integration connections and then developers work to implement them. This requires expensive IT resources who have been trained extensively to use tools that are used to create these integrations. Since developers are high-value resources that have limited availability, this is not the most productive use of their time.

Ensuring data security is another difficulty. In most cases, the business data that has to be exchanged is highly valuable and needs to be secured. There are also tough regulatory requirements to secure Personal Identifiable Information (PII), Healthcare Information (HIPAA) and financial Payment Card Industry (PCI), using standard-based approaches. This places extra effort and restrictions on how B2B integrations can be setup.

Lastly, it’s a high operational expenses to maintain and manage. Ongoing maintenance of B2B integrations is complex and fraught with daily issues related to missing files, incorrect file formats, zero sized files, missed triggers and events, undelivered acknowledgements, data not correctly processed, data not being delivered on time, and lot more. Monitoring all of this becomes difficult as these B2B integrations are often not centrally managed but depend on different tools, data protocols, and scripts that are running all over the place. Low operation efficiencies increase costs and thus reduce profits.

Q: In the next-generation approach, what type of users are involved in B2B process and what are their roles?

A: There are three types of user roles in B2B processes:

· IT Developer users – They monitor the overall process and will be responsible for governance, control, and security. They are not to be involved in day-to-day management of data flows and troubleshooting of issues, which is what they do now.
· Internal Business users – These are operations people who manage and monitor day-to-day running of data flows and have access to dashboards to see status and troubleshoot common problems themselves. They are more empowered in the new approach and no longer have to wait for I.T. Staff to do things.
· External Partner users – For the first time, the external users who work for partner companies are themselves able to setup simple connections with their larger customers and partners. They are able to use templates to create new transactions, trigger transactions manually or with file uploads, monitor transaction execution in dashboard, and handle notifications of success or failure.

Q: What are your plans for keeping Adeptia on the forefront of technology innovation?

A: Adeptia has the vision to radically improve B2B integration by providing a next-generation technology that is unique in multiple aspects. Foremost, we are a business application, and not a developer tool. Adeptia provides a web-based application that allows configuration of B2B integrations rather than a developer tool that generates code.

We enable self-service for business users by allowing business users to themselves create B2B integrations rather than going to the I.T. Staff. This reduces time from multiple weeks down to a few hours to create these connections. Adeptia Connect lets anyone who knows how to use a spreadsheet perform data mapping, data transformation, and data integration with customers, partners, and suppliers. With Adeptia, the developers’ role is focused on governance while the day-to-day operations role is done by business users.

Adeptia technology also ensures high level of security and control of the precious business data. Security is automatic that the data in Adeptia is always encrypted while it is being moved and while it is at rest in the application.

Another capability that keeps us at the forefront is our central management of all B2B integrations from one place where operations users can create, manage and monitor all activity. This reduces costs and increases efficiencies.
