While designing the tablet grandPad had in mind those with little or no computer experience and those who have resisted conventional modern technology. The tablet has only the most essential apps, core functions and it features a basic interface so it requires no learning curve making it a perfect choice for seniors. We sat down with Isaac Lien, Co-founder and Head of Product at grandPad to learn more about grandPad:
Q: What is grandPad? Could you tell us something more about the company?
A: grandPad is a safe, simple, and delightful way for older adults to connect with their friends, families, and caregivers. We do this through a tablet and service that includes the hardware, LTE data connectivity, custom built apps and games, and world class customer support, all for a simple monthly membership.
My father and I started this company for my grandma, and the millions like her who have been left behind by technology. Now with grandPad, my grandma doesn’t have to enter wifi passwords before doing a video call; she’s always connected with the included LTE coverage. She doesn’t have to fumble to charge the device with a tiny cable – we have wireless charging included. Most importantly, she’s able to connect with her family across the county. Her friends and family all have access to a free mobile app that lets them share photos, and make video calls with her. Even though she lives in a small town in Iowa, her family can stay connected with her from anywhere in the world.
Although we founded grandPad to solve a personal need, there is a much larger societal issue of loneliness and social isolation among seniors over the age of 75. Our solution is designed to help reduce this problem. For example, Ethel who is 97 years old, lives independently in Santa Monica in her own home. She previously used no modern technology, but now with grandPad, she’s able to video call her grandchildren daily, and is able to see photos that her family shares with her. grandPad has enriched Ethel’s life and is a way for her to stay more connected with those she cares about. There are more than 30 million people in the U.S. like Ethel who can benefit from our solution.

Q: You’ve recently announced a new tablet designed by Acer; tell us something more?
A: We have partnered with Acer to design a tablet built from the ground up for the needs of older adults. We built custom hardware due to the failings of standard technology products. Most standard tablets are not built with the needs of people of age 90+ in mind. Our new grandPad was designed specifically for these these people.
Q: Can you give us more insights into its features?
A: The new grandPad tablet has innovative new features, including:
● High-quality, dual front-facing speakers that make it easier to hear loved ones speak during video calls, and for enriched music listening.
● A 10% larger holding area on the edges of the tablet.
● An increase in screen brightness and pixel density that give the user a better viewing experience.
● A wireless charging dock, making charging simple, removing the need for cords and plugs.
● A new flashlight and magnifying glass application that utilizes the flash on the rear camera.

Q: Could you tell us something more about your pricing?
A: The grandPad service has a subscription-based pricing model. Rather than buying a product upfront, you pay a month-to-month (or optionally annual) subscription for the service. This subscription includes everything the grandPad user needs.

Q: What are your plans for next 6-9 months?
A: In the next 6-9 months we will continue to delight our grandPad users and increase the value we provide to them. We are improving our product on an ongoing basis and will be adding in new games and apps to the grandPad.
We will also continue to add features for the “companion” users of grandPad. These are the friends and family members that are able to communicate, video call, and share photos with the grandPad via our free iOS, Android, and web apps. We’re seeing great engagement from our companion users, so we will be adding more features to those apps to enrich their experience.
