MicroEJ Facilitates The Connection Of IoT Devices To The Cloud

Listen to this article

MicroEJ is one of the main providers of embedded software solutions. Company was launched in 2004 and since then it is experiencing a strong and steady growth in a wide variety of industries including communication appliances, automotive, energy, medical, aerospace, industrial control, metering and building automation. Below is our interview with Vincent Perrier from MicroEJ:

Vincent-Perrier

Q: Could you explain the most prominent advantages of your Operating System (MicroEJ OS)?

A: MicroEJ delivers 4 major benefits:

1) MicroEJ allows device manufacturers to develop more quickly on microcontrollers and microprocessors embedded software that delivers a better user experience.

2) MicroEJ allows device manufacturers to capitalize on their software investments as they create embedded software that is portable across all processor architectures, whatever the chosen RTOS, compiler and C libraries and compiler.

3) MicroEJ allows device manufacturers to better manage the software content of their devices by offering more flexibility than full firmware updates, thanks to dynamic download of code as apps, up to creating an ecosystem through an online store infrastructure similar to mobile solutions.

4) MicroEJ allows device manufacturers to facilitate the connection of IoT devices to the cloud, by supporting web protocols and IoT frameworks and the ability to create dynamically downloadable agents that enable connecting to any IoT cloud platform without re-programming or firmware update.

Q: MicroEJ OS offers a full set of libraries for wired and wireless connectivity; tell us something moe?

A: MicroEJ provides connectivity for multiple protocols and layers/links, as well as secured communications to cloud services.

MicroEJ OS allows managing multiple wired and wireless physical connectivity layers and transport layers, IP-based or not, like: Z-Wave, Bluetooth, Thread, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Cellular.

MicroEJ OS can also support a full stack of IP-based protocols for interfacing with web services and IoT cloud platforms: UDP-TCP/IP, HTTP, REST, CoAP, MQTT, LWM2M.

Q: What have been some major milestones over the last 12 months?

A: MicroEJ released its major version 4, introducing the capabilities for running safely multiple apps on MicroEJ OS in a full sandboxing environment, and for downloading apps from the online MicroEJ Store.

MicroEJ 4 also comes with new tools and resources for developers: MicroEJ Studio, a free tool for developing apps and publishing them to the MicroEJ Community Store. Tools, doc and code are available on the MicroEJ Developer website.

Q: Who is your ideal customer and why?

A: There are various customer profiles who would need MicroEJ:

1) a customer who uses Android or Linux on a microprocessor (MPU) for its current product line, and wants to go for a “design-to-cost” version for higher volumes based on a microcontroller (MCU)

2) a customer who wants to create an IoT ecosystem (end user, app developers, service providers) around its device for offering a user experience and creating business models similar to smartphones and tablets

3) a customer who has several product lines, and wants to rationalize its costs and create reusable software components using an embedded platform across several product lines on different MCU architectures or low-level software foundations (BSP, RTOS, compiler, libraries)

4) a customer who wants to add some connectivity to its product line with multiple complex protocols and stacks and needs a platform to simplify the design and mitigate risks

5) a customer who is using below $1 MCU (either 8/16-bit or ultra low-cost 32-bit) and wants to design a more “featured” product with an OS to simplify design (HW and SW) and secure the product launch

6) a customer who needs to do lots of graphics but cannot afford an MPU/GPU, or a customer that has a large number of pages on a basic display and needs to have a compact representation of the GUI to save flash

7) a customer who needs to connect to an IoT cloud platform but doesn’t know how or doesn’t want to be locked to a particular technology or vendor (having the flexibility to switch from one to another)

8) a customer who can’t do full firmware updates because of network low availability/latency/bandwidth or who wants to adjust content of its device to match technical or business objectives (flexibility to download smaller pieces of code)

Q: What are your plans for next six months?

A: We’re rolling out all components of MicroEJ 4 and will continue to further enhance our technology in various areas, in order to better support our customer use cases and align with some of the application domains that we target like home/building automation, smart appliances, wearables, industrial automation, smart cities, smart energy.
