Q: You’ve recently announced $27.5M in Series C Round; could you tell us something more?

A: We’re very proud to have secured our largest round of funding yet. The $27.5 million round was led by Sapphire Ventures, with participation from our existing investors, Bessemer Venture Partners and 83North. Sapphire Ventures is a $2.4 billion venture capital firm focused on scaling innovative, technology-driven companies and entrepreneurs, who share our long-term vision for building a cloud platform for mobile. So we’re positive this is going to be a really strong partnership. Something that we didnt talk about much during the announcement was our plan to expand – we’re looking to hire and grow into new markets like South East Asia, Germany and France. It’s going to be a truly exciting new phase for the business.

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to Wandera?

A: Wandera offers organizations a solution for two key areas – Enterprise Mobile Security and Data Management – using a unique gateway architecture to protect and enable corporate mobility.

Our Mobile Security solution includes Mobile Threat Defense, designed to identify vulnerabilities and protect devices from targeted mobile attacks. It also includes Content Filtering features to extend this protection by allowing organisations to manage unapproved device usage and block access to risky sites and apps.

Our Data Management solution provides unparalleled visibility into how corporate devices are being used so that admins can create informed policies that reduce data consumption, prevent bill shock and improve productivity.

Q: How exactly do you utilize machine intelligence?

A: Our machine intelligence technology MI:RIAM is powered by 2 billion daily inputs from the mobile devices in our network. She continuously analyses these vast feeds of information to detect and respond to new insights. As we continue adding more and more data to the engine, we will see ongoing improvement in the accuracy in which we detect anomalous device behaviour and zero-day mobile threats, keeping us one step ahead of hackers who are targeting businesses via mobile devices.

In a practical example, MI:RIAM recently identified over 400 variations of the SLocker malware targeting business’ corporate mobile device fleets through third-party app stores. These ‘polymorphic’ new strains of malware had been redesigned and repackaged to avoid all known detection techniques. This type of fast changing threat can only be reliably identified by machine learning technology. While traditional security engines rely on signature-based detection, MI:RIAM identifies the digital DNA of malware and other threats. This enables her to uncover previously unknown threats and new variations of malware by identifying patterns and common threads between the exploits.

Q: Could you tell us something more about your mobile application?

A: Our mobile app is just the end-point component of our solution. Wandera is actually a cloud-based solution but the app does play an important part. It monitors the pulse of the user device, whether smartphone or tablet, and collects these heartbeats for analysis. It’s the first, but important, view into mobile data. For example, it enables us to identify connections to rogue infrastructure like malicious Wi-Fi spots.

The app is the only exposure the end user has to Wandera since the dashboard is only used by the administrators at our customer organizations. The app is employee friendly and helps educate users on their data usage and notifies them of any important policy updates you’ve introduced. Most importantly, we alert them directly for any major security event.
