Woodside Homes – Quality Structure And Innovative Design Is What Keeps Homebuyers Coming Back

Woodside Homes, has re-established itself as one of the top 10 private homebuilders in the US. In the past 12 months, they have built and closed over 1,800 homes, with a 30% growth rate. Below is our interview with Joel Shine, CEO of Woodside Homes:

Q: Though Woodside Homes has been around for 40 years, you created a new focus and purpose following the real estate collapse in 2008. How did Woodside Home pull itself out of the market crisis?

A: “Crisis” is a fitting word for the real estate market during those years, but it’s not a word that I perceive as all together negative. John F. Kennedy often referenced the two characters that comprise the word
“crisis” in the Chinese language: danger and opportunity.

I was brought in as the CEO in 2009 when the company was in bankruptcy. It was a compelling challenge for me in my career. Using a common housing phrase, Woodside Homes had great bones. It was a private company with a solid foundation and a respected legacy in home building. The real estate crash forced us to revisit and revamp our business model. What was clear is that we didn’t need to be bigger. We had an important opportunity to be better. So, we focused on the regional markets where we were strongest and went “all-in” on setting the bar for design. Quality structure and innovative, personalized design is what keeps homebuyers coming back. We can credit the real estate crash for helping us establish a new business motto which we live by today: Better By Design.

Q: What have been some major milestones over the last 24 months?

A: We are in this for the long game. We are less focused on specific milestones and more focused on maintaining a sustainable trajectory of success. In the past 12 months, we have built and closed over 1,800 homes, with a 30% growth over the previous 12-month period. Today, Woodside Homes has re-established itself as one of the top 10 private homebuilders in the US. More and more families are buying their second and third homes with us. That’s when we know we’re on the right track with our dedication to quality service and design. We are underscoring a strong sense of badge value and trust with our homebuyers.

Q: What geographic markets are you focusing on currently?

A: Woodside Homes has established new communities in our home state of Utah as well as Arizona, Northern California, Southern California, Central California, and Nevada.

Q: What are your plans for the next year? Any new marketing campaigns worth noting?

A: Our marketing efforts acknowledge the momentous act of investing in a home while honoring the more emotional role “home” plays in our day-to-day lives. We have many dedicated employees who are truly invested in pairing families with their perfect home. With our current initiatives we wanted to reflect that intent by personalizing the experience and maintaining a rapport with homebuyers beyond closing.

This year we launched the “here to help you home” concept with the introduction of Woodside Homes’ Hannah. Hannah is a spokesperson representing the collective voice of Woodside, helping homebuyers navigate areas where they need the most guidance while allowing our team to showcase diverse areas of experience and expertise. She contributes helpful advice on home buying, home maintenance, building a sense of community, designing and decorating… she even has a mean recipe for red pepper enchiladas. Q: What’s the achievement Woodside Homes is most proud of?

A: I think it’s the same for most of us at Woodside Homes. We feel pride when our communities establish their roots. I hear it time and time again with this team. It’s a sense of fulfillment when we witness a group of young friends playing together in one of our communities, new family additions, neighbors socializing, trees maturing and landscaping flourishing – all brought together by our homes. One of our sales managers mentioned seeing a “welcome baby” sign on a home she sold a young couple two years ago. She said, “these families are growing with us” and we get to grow with them through our homes.” That’s something to feel good about.
