Q: Kirk, what’s your startup story? How did Motomo start?
A: Motomo is a small, well micro, app development company. The name comes from the combination of my wife’s last name, my dog’s name, and my last name. I have been doing web application and data driven application development for many years for various corporate clients. I enjoy what I do, and Motomo is a vehicle for my own ideas. My wife would say it is simply for me to do more work, but I really like doing this stuff, so if nothing really comes from it, so be it. I am not spending any money on golf club memberships, or lots of power tools… I just do app development.
Q: What was your inspiration for WoofLinks?
A: The inspiration for WoofLinks is simple and came from my walking my dog and talking to other dog owners in my local dog park. When my dog got along well with another dog and they had a great play, it was natural to try and meet up again. However, everyone has their own life, so even when we exchanged numbers and could SMS each other, it was really hit and miss and was too ‘active’. That is, it was just too much hard work. WoofLinks is a more passive way to make connections with dogs that your dog gets along with, and you can find out when they are walking and vice versa.

We are also building trending into the application. For example, do you want to see areas that are frequented by small dogs at certain times? Big dogs? Then we can help our users with that kind of data to either find, or avoid, certain areas depending on their preferences. Of course, one of the driving factors was to make sure that our dogs had enough time with us, and to walk. So as a simple application to monitor your walks with your dog – both time and distance – you can get some insights into both your dog’s and your own health as a factor of a time together. That is, I think quality time with a dog is the health benefit, not necessarily ‘steps’ or ‘distance walked’, although the app measure that as well.
Q: What are main benefits for WoofLinks users?
A: The main benefits are really to just to have fun and help their dog have a play. And this is by ensuring that they have good play opportunities and get socialized with other dogs. We know our dogs love us, but they also need good unstructured play with other dogs. This makes them a better dog, and ultimately makes us happier through their happiness. So, that is really the idea, to be happy. It is just an app, it is not a cure all, nor are we saying it will motivate you to lose weight, be sexy, or anything like that. We are just about having fun. And having fun with your dog is some of the best fun you can have.

Q: What makes WoofLinks different and a good choice?
A: Well, the app is really user driven, and we welcome feedback and suggestions. Since the app came about from brainstorming sessions with fellow dog walkers in an off the leash dog park, we would like to view the whole world and one big opportunity for Dogs to walk, meet, play, and enjoy their lives with their humans. If “The world is your dog park” … then we think that is a better world. Dogs give us a lot of happiness and love. We owe it to them to give them the best, and we all want them to have fun and be happy. That’s all we’re about really. Having a good time with dogs. I can’t really think of a better choice :-)

Q: What are your plans for next 12 months?
A: Well, the next step is to build out the WoofLinks web site. We are going to integrate the data from the app, so you can view your walks, WoofLinks, and stats. We are also adding the ability for users to find doggy day care and dog walkers in their area, when they are at work, or on vacation. Dog carers and dog walkers will have the dog ‘assigned’ to them for the period of care, so owners can see where their dogs is at the moment. We will also be building in the ability to input your dog’s health information. This would of course be accessible to carers, and instantly available to any vet at any time in the case of an emergency. We also plan on walking the dogs a lot and posting information on our facebook site.
