Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to 3Scan?

A: 3Scan combines automation, machine learning and artificial intelligence to revolutionize histology in support of translational medical research, pharmaceutical development and the biotech industry.

Our new approach digitizes whole tissue samples through serial sectioning and simultaneous high resolution image capture, enabling us to compute metrics and apply mathematical models. This technique empowers scientific discovery by creating a map of the tissue micro-environment, and not only producing detailed 3D representations but also providing decision support in the emerging field of computational pathology.

Q: Tell us about the early days of 3Scan. What were the biggest challenges?

A: ​To facilitate data extraction from whole tissue samples, 3Scan not only had to innovate every step from tissue preparation through image capture, we also had to invent new ways to store and access terabytes worth of spatially indexed data.

Q: Why is now the time for a technology solution like 3Scan?

A: ​Scientific discovery will require a new standard for gathering and cataloguing tissue data in order to solve the most complex of medical challenges and deliver truly personalized medicine. With this new level of rigor, medicine can map all of the related structures and systems that contribute to diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, or inflammatory bowel disease.

Q: How do you manage to handle data outputs of up to a terabyte per cm3?

A: ​​3Scan has invested time, talent, and infrastructure into building a repository and management system to handle the enormous amounts of data produced during our process. It is only through annotation, examination, and comparison that the next medical breakthroughs will be possible. That is why we have spent so much effort perfecting our proprietary algorithms and storage capabilities.

Q: What can we expect from 3Scan in the future?
