A Look At The New Epson ColorWorks C6500A – Talk With CEO Of DuraFast Label Company

Listen to this article

Basat Khalifa, CEO of DuraFast Label Company, recently sat down with us to talk about a new 8-inch color label printer from Epson, the Epson ColorWorks C6500A color label printer. Below is a brief except from our conversation.

Q: The Epson ColorWorks C6500A appears to be selling well. What makes this color label printer so special?

A: It is an incredible label printer! The Epson CW-C6500A is appealing to a wide range of customers for several reasons. For starters, it is the replacement printer for the popular Epson GP-C831 color label printer. So, you have a lot of C831 users looking to upgrade. These users already know the benefits of the C831, all of which are even better with the CW-C6500A. Because it’s a rugged industrial 8-inch GHS BS5609 color label printer, the Epson CW-C6500A can print large chemical drum labels, making it a great choice for those in the petroleum industry. In addition, the Epson ColorWorks C6500A color label printer has been designed for the enterprise label market with features commonly found in industrial thermal transfer printers which are used to print labels and barcodes in large quantities.

Q: Why would an enterprise organization want a color label printer if they’re currently using thermal printers? Aren’t they just printing black barcodes and nutrition facts labels?

A: You’re correct, thermal printers only print a single color (depending on the ribbon used). Thermal label printers are great for printing barcodes and nutrition labels, and they are an economical choice. But what if you could have an economical full color label printer that does everything the direct thermal label printer can do but with beautiful, full color graphics? What often happens in enterprise environments is a two-step label printing process. First, they use preprinted color labels, which they either print on their own or pay a service provider to print them. Then, they run these preprinted labels through their direct thermal label printers to add variable data like barcodes, lot numbers, expiration dates, and so forth. The Epson ColorWorks C6500A color label printer, which is comparably priced to industrial thermal label printers, makes it possible to print the labels in full color in a single pass. No need to run the labels through a second time.

Q: Was the Epson GP-C831 color label printer able to compete with these industrial thermal printers?

A: Yes and no. The GP-C831 prints full color labels and can include variable data, so it has been used to print full color label and barcodes in this manner. However, it was a standalone color label printer. The Epson ColorWorks C6500A color label printer has remote management features and compatibility with a broad range of middleware like SAP that allow it to become part of a larger fleet of industrial label printers and fit into enterprise workflows.

Q: What other improvements does the Epson ColorWorks C6500A color label printer have?

A: The Epson ColorWorks C6500A color label printer uses Epson Serial PrecisionCore TFP technology, which results in a faster print speed (up to 5 inches per second) and a higher print resolution (up to 1200 dpi versus just 750 on the GP-C831). It also has a general purpose I/O port so you can connect an external applicator or other device directly to the printer. The Epson ColorWorks C6500A color label printer comes with an auto cutter so you can use either pre-die-cut labels or continuous labels with it. Meanwhile, another version of this printer, the Epson CW-C6500P, comes with a peeler for applications where you want to print a label and then apply it immediately such as shipping and logistics labels.

Q: What other improvements does the Epson ColorWorks C6500A color label printer have?

A: I notice the Epson GP-C831 color label printer uses a tractor feeder, much like the old dot matrix printers I used to use. Does the Epson ColorWorks C6500A color label printer use this same mechanism?

Q: What other improvements does the Epson ColorWorks C6500A color label printer have?

A: No, the 8-pin tractor feed is unique to the GP-C831. The Epson ColorWorks C6500A color label printer uses traditional label rolls, which greatly increase label selection for this new label printer. You’re no longer limited to media configured for 8-pin tractor feeders. In addition, the Epson ColorWorks C6500A color label printer features removable media spindles so you can swap out label rolls quickly and easily as your needs change. DuraFast Label Company has additional media spindles (sold separately) available.

Q: Speaking of DuraFast Label Company, you manufacture your own labels, correct?

A: Yes, we are a label manufacturing company that sells the leading color label label printers on the market, such as the Epson CW-C6500A, as well as manufactures labels for these same printers.
