An Interview With Alex Simon, The Founder And CEO At Digital 86

Listen to this article

Alex Simon, a longtime public relations executive, is the CEO and Founder of Digital 86.

Referred to by the media as “the digital fixer”, he has made a career out of promoting and protecting high profile athletes, celebrities and executives.

Simon got his career started in 1999 as a publicist for professional fighters. From the NFL to the NBA, from Formula 1 to UFC, from Forbes 500 executives to self-development gurus, he has worked with high profile individuals in most industries for over two decades. Here is our interview with Alex:

Q: Alex, how did you get started doing online reputation management?

A: I started doing public relations for professional fighters. Some of the guys often found themselves in trouble with the law, so a lot of my work became crisis management. As the world became more digital, we started doing more internet-based work. That led to me founding Digital 86.

Q: What is your main marketing strategy to acquire new clients?

A: We don’t advertise – most new clients come to us via referrals. I practice what I preach, so constantly working on the online reputation of Digital 86 is what works best for us. When potential clients look us up online the results speak for themselves.

Q: Describe a great moment in your business.

A: We recently had a celebrity client who was wrongfully accused of a crime and his online presence was suffering from the media reports of his arrest. He came to us for help and within a few months we were able to completely ‘clean’ the Google search results for his name by promoting all the good things he had done and by portraying him fairly. He could finally get back to his successful career. Situations like these always make me feel good.

Q: What can our readers do to protect or improve their online reputation?

A: The fastest way is to secure the URL to your name (i.e.: johnsmith.com) and create a website. This is a must if your name is still available. Next, try to be active on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. These social media sites rank really well. With these simple – and inexpensive – steps you are already in control of half of the first page of Google search for your name.

Lastly, remember that if you don’t control your online presence, somebody else will do it for you. You want to always be in control of what is said about you online.
