Below is our recent interview with April Spears, CEO & President at ELTEC:

April SpearsQ: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to ELTEC?

A: ELTEC has been in business over 50 years. In the traffic industry we supply solar warning systems and time clocks to cities, states, and municipalities. Our products are sold through dealers in the United States and into Canada.

Q: Can you tell us something more about your products? What makes them unique?

A: We have several products: 24 hour systems, RRFBs, school zone systems, LED embedded signs, and of course our time clocks which are used for a variety of applications. I think what makes ELTEC stand out is we can customize our systems to meet the needs of our end users. They aren’t comity products like many of our competitors use. We also size our systems to work in all areas and conditions.

Q: I read something about your strategic partnership with 511 Technologies; could you tell us something more?

A: ELTEC has partnered with 511 Technologies to create IOTraffic. We have already deployed LED embedded signs this year. Now the partnership is working on cloud-based systems. Earlier this year Salem, Oregon received the first IOTraffic remote monitoring system: The RMS 5000. The systems give real time feedback to the end users such as equipment health, crosswalk activations and more.

Q: Can you really say that you reduce the number of fatalities that occur on roads every year?

A: ELTEC’s products caution drivers of an impending danger. The systems we provide are in compliance with the MUTCD. They have done multiple studies to state these types of systems improve vehicle slow down and stop rates. Yes I do believe we are decreasing fatalities and injuries each year.

Q: How is HAWK system better compared to the traditional one? How does it work?

A: The traditional HAWK controller is basically a modified version of an AC intersection controller often seen inside a large skirt-mounted cabinet that sits on the ground. ELTEC HAWK systems are DC powered and available as a solar product with conflict monitoring functionality similar to large intersection cabinets. They can be packaged as wireless stand-alone systems mounted on the signal pole eliminating the need for wire trenching or boring. If our customer still prefers to use grid power we can make single controllers power a fairly large array of HAWK signal clusters from one side of the highway to the next.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: ELTEC has undergone several changes in the last three years. Our plans are to grow as we continue to release new products. By expanding our product line and continuing to deliver great service we hope to gain more of the market share.
