An Interview With Debora Mesa, Co-Founder & President Of WoHo Systems

Listen to this article

WoHo is shifting the way in which we design and build buildings. Below is our recent interview with Debora Mesa, Co-Founder & President of WoHo Systems, Inc.:

Q: What are you developing? Can you tell us something more about WoHo?

A: We are developing technologies, systems and platforms that make Architecture (with capital A) and real estate meet. With a discrete number of components we are able to build state-of-the-art buildings in record times; and best of all, with predictability, improved economics and reduced environmental footprint. With our products we are determined to raise the standards of design and construction across the world. The reason we are able to do this is that WoHo’s team brings together expertise in different fields. We have been in development, construction, engineering and design. And so critical areas that are typically misaligned in most architectural developments, we fully integrate them.

Q: What are the key benefits of using the WoHo?

A: WoHo is addressing the biggest pain points in development and construction, such as quality, innovation and efficiency. But even more importantly we are addressing the urgent societal issues affected by these sectors: attainability, sustainability and safety.

There is a high degree of intelligence and know-how embedded in the processes and products that we design and fabricate, and so the energy of developing each and every WoHo project is never wasted but reinvested in growing and improving what we build and the way we do it. We care about the short, medium and long term of the buildings that we build.

Q: What are some of the real-world results enterprises can expect with your solution?

A: Great quality inside-out: We definitely care about how buildings look and we allow for the necessary degree of customization to fit a diversity of users and contexts; but we are foremost concerned with ensuring a robust and fine-tuned core (structure, mechanical systems, insulation and fire-proofing layers, etc.) that will support the activity in an efficient and healthy manner. The advanced design, engineering and manufacturing of our buildings will result in more resilient, smart and therefore sustainable buildings.

Predictability of time and cost: We pay as much attention to developing our products than we pay to developing our processes of fabricating, assembling and operating them. There is much room for improvement in how construction is delivered and we are tackling every part of it to enable unprecedented transparency.

Attainability: When integration of parts, processes and teams is achieved, we are confident we can eliminate the redundancies and inefficiencies that end up making architecture inaccessible for most citizens.

Q: Your customer base – is it within specific industries at the moment?

A: WoHo’s initial focus is on the residential market, including mixed-use development. However, WoHo’s systems versatility opens a wide array of architectural solutions for any industry. We are already seeing an increasing interest in lab and industrial buildings at the moment and we will remain flexible and open to serve those projects and programs in greater need.

Q: What are your plans for the future? Do you have any new features in the pipeline?

A: We are currently fabricating at WoHo Lab a prototype building that we are planning to replicate in the Boston area in 2021. This will be a great way to get stakeholders familiarized with our system, the high levels of quality and the ease of assembly and inspection. Our plan is to select a few projects next year with developer partners, so that we can quickly scale up and provide value across the US.
