Below is a recent interview with Lucas Demysh, CEO & CTO (P.Eng, M.A.Sc, B.A.Sc) at Metallurgical Sensors, Inc.:
Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to your company?
A: Metallurgical Sensors, Inc. (Meten) designs and implements innovative custom sensor products and systems to create safe and efficient industrial workplaces. By using our technology, steel mills, metal smelters, oil and gas, aggregates, pulp and paper, food and beverage, automotive, pharmaceutical, robotics, and general surveillance environments are more productive and environmentally sustainable.
Q: Any highlights on your recent announcement?
A: We recently announced that from May 8-11, 2023, we are exhibiting at AISTech, the world’s premier annual event for the iron and steel technology industry. Last year in Pittsburg, I presented a technical paper focused on advances in vibration slag detection. This year in Detroit’s Huntington Place, we will demonstrate our innovative Slagman Vibration Slag Detector (VSD) system by means of a scale model that will be operating in our booth #1200A throughout the show. I look forward to meeting and visiting with customers and attendees to discuss our offering.

Q: Can you tell us more about your offering?
A: Metsen’s offering is comprised of seven core product solutions: Extreme Vision Systems; Vibration Slag Detection (VSD); Optical Slag Detection (OSD); Endoscopes; Absolute Length Measurement (ALM); a Hydroweigh System, and Mold Oscillation Analytics. In addition to products, which is a dedicated business unit at Metsen, we have a research and development and a maintenance and services business unit. Each business unit offers customers individualized solutions to meet their business needs.
Q: What can we expect from your company in the next 6 months? What are your plans?
A: At Metsen, we are on a positive growth trajectory driven by international sales opportunities across the markets we serve and R&D opportunities in both current and adjacent markets. A major priority is continuous quality management and becoming ISO 9001:2015 certified. Presence and participation in industry tradeshows and supporting programs that help the local community in which we operate are additional priorities. After more than 20 years of operating virtually, we recently opened a new headquarters office in Mississauga, Ontario to support steady growth.

Q: What is the best thing about your company that people might not know about?
A: It’s a little-known fact, but Metsen was the first metallurgical sensor company to market a camera system for slag detection. Slag is the waste left over from metal smelting or refining. It’s a high-risk environment that can now be safely and cost-efficiently monitored with specialized cameras designed to go where people physically cannot. I hold Canadian Patent No. 2,359.697 and U.S. Patent No. 6,562,285 titled: “Method and Apparatus for Detecting Slag Carryover,” which has served as a catalyst for developing several technologies that significantly enhance metal-making production and operations and allow us to continually innovate today. We are also full-service software developers, with expertise in image processing, optics, instrumentation integration, and metallurgy.
