An Interview With Mike Ferris, Chief Strategy Officer Of Sacks Parente Golf Company

Listen to this article

Sacks Parente Golf has a very simple mission: help all golfers make more putts by making the best putting instruments ever built. Below is our recent interview with Mike Ferris, Chief Strategy Officer of Sacks Parente Golf Company:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to Sacks Parente Golf?

A: Company founders, Steve Sacks and Rich Parente knew that it was time to shake up the conventional thinking about putter design. After all, many of the putter designs we see today have been around since the 1960’s.

Making more putts is impacted by Feel, Alignment, Distance Control, Tempo, and Stability. How a putting instrument addresses these critical putting needs is paramount to having the best putting performance.

Sacks Parente Golf putting instruments combine the company’s patented Ultra-Low Balance Point (ULBP) system, which is defined as a balance point 5” or less from the sole of the putter, very high Moment of Inertia (MOI), and weight-forward center of gravity. This unique combination achieves unparalleled feel and performance that defies current putting theory.

During the past 18 months, the Sacks Parente putter technology has received tremendous response and interest from tour players and amateurs alike. In just a few short months, the putters were put in play on several tours including the PGA Tour Champions, Web.com Tour, and LPGA Tour.

Q: What is your backstory? How did your company come into being?

A: We are very different from what you’re used to seeing. The truth is, modern putter technology has been lagging behind metal wood and iron technology. Substantial changes in technology are few and far between. It just seems that everything kind of looks the same, feels the same and putts the same. A sea of sameness.

Steve Sacks and Rich Parente first met working for opposing golf companies in the “The Golf Capital of the World”, located in north county San Diego. Despite being competitors in trade, the 2 master craftsmen formed an immediate admiration for one another due to overlapping goals. Each of them was committed to pushing the limits of club design and manufacturing to help all golfers enjoy the game through innovation. They want to keep expanding the boundaries.

Rich was the original co-founder and first President of Callaway Golf. Rich’s S2H2 patent that created the sensation known as the Big Bertha driver and changed the way woods were made forever.

Steve has been a pioneer in golf club manufacturing and has done extensive work in the use and effectiveness of exotic, alternative materials in golf club manufacturing and design and was a key party in the success of 2 putter companies. The two of them hold over 50 patents.

In 2011, they conceptualized the redistribution of weight throughout the putter and started on a quest to find the best materials and putter designs that would make it work. This began the journey. They developed technologies, materials selections, much testing and evaluation, and searching for the perfect elements to make their putter concept a reality. That journey led to the formation of the Sacks Parente Golf Company in 2018.

Q: Can you give us insights into your products?

A: Sacks Parente Golf has a very simple mission: help all golfers make more putts by making the best putting instruments ever built.

Our putter designs may look classic to some of you, but that’s where the similarities with putter designs of the past end. Rich and Steve certainly wanted designs that were comfortable for golfers to look at, but most importantly, they wanted their designs to include every technological advantage that they know.

Sacks Parente Golf putting instruments combine our patented Ultra-Low Balance Point (ULBP) system, very high MOI, and weight-forward center of gravity. This unique combination achieves unparalleled feel and performance that defies current putting theory.

Steve and Rich wanted to greatly improve the consistency of the roll off the face as compared to standard putters; so, all SPG putting instruments have an extremely high Moment-of-Inertia (MOI).

The location of the Center of Gravity (CG) is an emerging technology in putters. All Sacks Parente putting instruments have maximized the face-forward Center of Gravity to lessen the harmful sidespin (resulting from the gear effect) that rear-weighted putters cause on putts.

Combine these with our Ultra-Low Balance Point Technology and you have golfers experiencing a completely new feel and performance naturally. Our line of putters are all designed with ULBP technology and include the following models:

  • SERIES 18 – Cavity Sole Flange Blade

The Series 18 cavity sole design is a completely new genre of high-performance putter inspired by an iconic style that won virtually every major championship in golf. The style has returned with a level of technology and playability never before imagined in a blade putter. Milled from solid 303 Stainless Steel, with Tungsten and 6061 Aluminum, the Series 18 performs more beautifully than it looks.

  • SERIES 39 – The True Blade

The Series 39 features a profile you may recognize in the hands of golf’s greatest legends, reborn with a level of technology never imagined in a true blade putter. To maximize the MOI and diminish putter twist, the Series 39 has 126 grams of high-density tungsten, 2.5 times denser than steel, precisely located in the heel and toe. Its center of gravity is perfectly located between the front and back. This stabilizes the putter head while in motion and through impact, virtually eliminating all side spin on off-center hits.

  • SERIES 54 – Midsize and Large Mallets with VA (Vernier Acuity) or SS (Standard Stripe) Designs

The Series 54 is the world’s FIRST Vernier Acuity putting instrument. Vernier Acuity helps you maintain focus on the center target line, making it easier for you to visualize the intended roll, resulting in more putts made. Both the VA and SS are milled from solid 6061 Aluminum, with a weight forward design and Tungsten perfectly balanced on the heel and toe.

  • SERIES 66 – Cavity Back Flange Blade

The Series 66 features a familiar look, and that’s where all similarity ends. This putter took more than two years of research, development, robotic testing and 5 fully functioning versions, prior to a full year of testing by PGA touring professionals, before the final production version was ultimately introduced. Milled from solid 370 Brass, with tungsten, 7071 Aluminum, 6061 Aluminum, and stainless steel, the 66 has 80% of the weight redistributed to the heel and toe.

We’re not just bragging, (well, maybe a little), we have test results to prove our technology works. In recent testing from The Golf Labs, Sacks Parente putters were empirically proven to make more putts by being naturally easier to align, providing a more consistent stroke / speed control, better club path, and squaring the putter at impact.

The Golf Lab and members of its Advisory Board have been recognized with presentations at major global events such as the World Golf Fitness Summit, World Scientific Congress of Golf and the PGA of America Teaching Summit.

Q: What’s the secret behind your Ultra Low Balance Point technology? How does it work?

A: Ultra-Low Balance Point technology is a new concept in putter weight distribution, which is defined as a balance point 5” or less from the sole of the putter, where the golfer can now feel the head as it travels through the putting arc. This is similar to the way anchored putters would let you feel the head, but now in a standard length, and most importantly, without anchoring.

Along with feeling the putter head (probably for the first time) the ULBP patented system creates a natural putter release, squaring the head at impact and releasing the putter head, even in high stress situations. It takes away the need to steer your putter or fight it while you try to force it to release. It absolutely makes everyone, no matter his or her skill level, a more consistent putter.

In order to achieve our ULBP technology, we re-engineered and re-mastered the putter grip, the shaft and the head. Working together harmoniously these combined technologies create the ultimate putting instrument. Each part plays an integral role in redistributing the weight throughout the club.

  • The Grip – Using advanced nano cellular technology, our grips average a weight of less than 35 grams. They are less than half the weight of typical putter grips found on the market today, which was no simple task. Just as critical, they also meet our exacting standards for feel and comfort, exquisitely balancing just the right levels of tack and cushion. With 3 styles to choose from, golfers can customize them without any compromise on performance.
  • The Shaft – At approximately 1 gram per inch, our shafts are the high-performance engine that powers ULBP. With the help of our partners, like Olympic CO. LTD, we’ve engineered TORAY carbon fiber and graphite composite shafts that are ultra-lightweight, have a stroke specific CPM, and a unique dexterity unlike any other on the market.
  • The Head – We moved as much as 80% of the head weight to the heel and toe. We used the highest density tungsten available, in conjunction with lightweight alloys to redistribute the weight, thereby dramatically increasing MOI on tour weighted (350-360 gram) heads and keeping the center of gravity as close to the shaft axis as possible.

Q: What we can look forward to seeing from Sacks Parente Golf next?

A: Steve Sacks and Rich Parente spend an inordinate amount of time asking each other, what if? Those two words drive them to discover and create designs and technologies to make golf just a little easier for the rest of us.

First and foremost are new designs. This year we introduced the new cavity back blade 66. While it is a very traditional and accepted style, it is packed with more technology than any design before it. We will continue to work with this shape and build variations to give our fellow golfers a bigger choice.

As good as the model 54 mallet is, Steve and Rich are determined to design and build a next generation mallet that will move even more weight to where we know it will do the most good. It’s challenging due to the overall mass of the head.

Beyond designs Steve and Rich are testing some new and unique theories that, over time, will allow us to make putting instruments that will improve upon what we’ve started. It’s time for golfers to rethink their putter.
