Below is our recent interview with Sebastian Saviano, Founder & CEO of The American Cigar Co., Primo Lounge, and The American Cigar Press:
Q: Let’s start with the big picture. What unites The American Cigar Co., Primo Lounge, and The American Cigar Press?
A: Picture a “grain-to-glass-to-ash” ecosystem:
- The American Cigar Co. revives America’s heritage of cigar tobacco farming and hand-rolls boutique cigars crafted exclusively from U.S.-grown leaf.
- Primo Lounge is the cultural stage where those cigars are paired with regional bourbons, whiskeys, and immersive hospitality.
- The American Cigar Press documents the entire journey—publishing the history, voices, and revivalism behind it all.
Together, they form a feedback loop: product, place, and story continuously reinforcing one another.
Q: Where are the cigar lines now, and how can investors participate?
A: We’re wrapping final R&D on three flagship blends:
-
- Antebellum – 100% U.S.-grown leaf, honoring America’s lost puro tradition.
- Exsul – A rich, boutique-style cigar using Cuban-seed tobacco rolled entubado, the old-world way.
- Alcyon (in development) – A tribute to Golden Age Americana, crafted for serene reflection and timeless artistry, inspired by the “halcyon days” of myth and history.
Our pre-purchase agreements let early backers secure 100 cigars of a flagship blend with guaranteed first-run access, limited edition perks, and a place in our founding circle.
Q: Primo Lounge is still in development. What will guests experience—and why commit capital now?
A: Primo Lounge is more than a cigar bar—it’s a tasting narrative. Guests explore curated pairings of cigars with regional bourbons and whiskeys, accompanied by live jazz, vinyl nights, and zero TVs. Certified cigar sommeliers guide the experience; the entertainment is human conversation.
Expect jazz, vinyl nights, zero TVs, and certified cigar sommeliers. The entertainment is human conversation.
For investors, build-out equity is priced at cost. Day-one valuations align with top hospitality comps (4–6× revenue), and early partners receive lifetime membership and carried interest in future lounges.
Q: What is the story you’re trying to tell with The American Cigar Press titles?
A: At its core, The American Cigar Press exists to tell the stories behind the cigar—not just the tasting notes, but the labor, land, politics, and culture that shaped it. While we plan to publish a growing slate of voices over time, my own books make up The American Cigar Series, which lays the narrative and historical foundation for our broader mission.
- Volume I – America’s Cigar Story traces the rise, fall, and rebirth of the American cigar industry—from 19th-century factories and labor strikes to boutique revivals and digital culture.
- Volume II – Smoke & Oak explores the science and craft of pairing bourbon and cigars, offering a sensory roadmap that links Appalachian oak to Kentucky grain and American-grown tobacco.
- Volume III – The American Puro (forthcoming) uncovers the forgotten history of cigars made entirely with U.S. tobacco, asking what it means to smoke something truly American.
- Volume IV – Cigar America (forthcoming) examines the cigar as a symbol of masculinity, power, and rebellion in the American imagination—from Churchill to Castro, JFK to Scarface.
Together, these books form a living archive of American ritual, craft, and identity—whether someone smokes cigars or simply values the stories.

Q: What hurdles have you faced resurrecting American tobacco?
A: Infrastructure, first and foremost. Many barns were lost to soy or hemp conversions. We are co-funding retrofits, re-training rollers. It’s capital-intensive—but essential to revive domestic craft at scale.
Q: Walk us through your cigar development pipeline.
A:
- Seed trials across three micro-plots—testing soil, elevation, and curing conditions.
- Sensory evaluation by blenders, sommeliers, and even perfumers to catch nuance.
- Beta release of 1,000 sticks to our subscriber base.
- Full production if the blend scores 9+/10 across flavor, construction, and complexity.
The timeline from seed to stick? Around 14 to 18 months.
Q: Regulation is tightening for both tobacco and hospitality. How are you preparing?
A: We treat compliance like design: embed it early to avoid retrofits. Every lounge will feature purpose-built HVAC scrubbers that exceed OSHA particulate thresholds by over 30%.
And we’re exploring blockchain-backed authentication for our cigars, so each box — and select sticks — will carry a tamper-proof digital record of origin, craftsmanship, and journey from seed to smoke. It’s our way of pairing timeless American craft with next-generation transparency.
Q: Where do you see the company in two years?
A:
- Our Louisville flagship Primo Lounge | Smoke & Oak Edition open in 2026, with a second lease secured the same year. We’re also exploring opportunities in international markets.
- A portfolio of three core cigar lines plus limited single-farm editions.
- The American Cigar Press expanded into short-form documentaries—highlighting history, growers, rollers and more.
- A closed-loop supply chain sourcing 90%+ of materials (from cedar boxes to printed inserts) domestically.
Q: Why should someone who’s never smoked a cigar care about this ecosystem?
A: Because this is about more than cigars. It’s a live experiment in reviving forgotten American industries, shortening supply chains, and re-centering human connection—at a time when both are badly needed. You don’t have to light up to see the story worth telling.
