Below is our recent interview with Stephen C. Sefton, Founder & Designer of Third Coast Pillows:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to your company?
A: Third Coast Pillows creates decorative pillows that bridge two worlds: genuine artistry and genuine comfort. I design and produce each pillow with original artwork celebrating Chicago and the Great Lakes. These are the places that have shaped my life and continue to inspire my work. The company was born during a challenging chapter in my life. After a serious illness and recovery, I found myself reflecting on what truly mattered: the moments I’d spent with family, the quiet beauty of water, the energy and character of Chicago. I realized that decorative pillows, typically mass-produced and impersonal, could be something different. They could tell real stories. They could carry meaning, and they can drive change. Today, Third Coast Pillows represents a specific philosophy: that thoughtful design and exceptional quality aren’t luxuries reserved for the wealthy. They’re what people deserve in the spaces where they actually live. Each pillow is engineered for softness and durability, beautifully designed to spark conversation, and created with intention.

Q: What makes you the best choice? How are you unique?
A: Third Coast Pillows is built on two inseparable principles: uncompromising quality and genuine meaning.
When I started making Third Coast Pillows, I wanted to make decorative pillows that were of the highest quality, and I was able to do this through numerous rounds of sampling, material testing, and focus groups. I spent months sampling fabrics, testing fill materials, weights and volumes, and running focus groups on each iteration before I ever sold a single pillow. The result isn’t an accident, its purpose driven engineering for genuine comfort. In the end, I chose one of the most expensive fabrics for the pillow covers because of how soft it was. I ended up custom making my own custom pillow inserts to the exact size, weight, and support that my focus groups helped me narrow in on, because nothing on the market already was exactly right. I wanted to make a decorative pillow that was washable as a core strength, and to highlight this I chose heavy duty zippers instead of hidden ones, I made my own enameled zipper pulls to further enforce the intention of this decision so that washability is seen as a feature and strength. All this echoes the brand’s identity, and my own story of strength and resilience.
Third Coast Pillows also have meaning. Every design comes from a real moment in my life. These aren’t generic patterns or what I call “hotel art” – the kind of decorative pillow you see mass-produced across retail chains with no story, no soul. My designs capture specific memories, emotions, and perspectives. The Chicago skyline design isn’t just a skyline; it’s my relationship with a city that shaped me. The Great Lakes designs aren’t decorative; they’re personal. When someone brings a Third Coast Pillow into their home, they’re not just buying comfort. They’re inviting a piece of authentic artistry into their space. That’s the difference. That’s what can’t be replicated by a corporation optimizing for profit margins. When a person is buying a Third Coast Pillow, you’re buying something that has a story, not just a picture on a surface.
Q: Who is your ideal client and why?
A: My ideal clients are the people who don’t accept the status quo. The people who walk into a big box store, see thousands of identical pillows, and think “there has to be something better than this.” They understand that their living space, the room where they relax, where family gathers, deserves intention and authenticity. My customers are people who care about Chicago or the Midwest. They have regional pride by either living here, or they used to live here before moving away, or they vacationed here and want to remember the great times they had.
My pillows are also striking a chord with younger crowd too. There’s a moment in life when you stop being okay with generic dorm stuff. You want something that’s grown up, sophisticated, but still comfortable and inviting. These are not your grandmother’s stiff and uncomfortable decorative pillows that are only moved out of the way. These are “Squish Mellow Soft” decorative pillows with a grown-up style.

Q: What can we expect from you in the next 6 months? What are your plans?
A: You’re going to see me more. I’m building brand awareness. I’m telling this story—my story—and I’m showing people that there’s a different way to do things. I want these pillows in real spaces where people can touch them and see them and understand what makes them different. But there’s the bigger vision here too. I see Third Coast Pillows as the first of many regional pillow brands. I want to help other regional artists do exactly what I’m doing. I’ve figured out the manufacturing, the supply chain, and the systems. I want to teach that to artists in the Pacific Northwest, the Gulf Coast, the Rocky Mountains, the Application Foothills, the South, the Great Plains, New York – New York!, the Northeast, and many other regions to create their own pillow brands. Every region deserves a brand that celebrates it, made by someone who actually lives there and loves it. Within the next couple years, I want to have helped launch five or more other regional pillow brands with others behind it too. That’s the real plan.

Q: What is the best thing about your company that people might not know about?
A: I think the best thing about the company people don’t know about is the meaning behind everything I do. Third Coast Pillows was started to protect and conserve the places that matter to me. In a very rough patch of my life, not knowing if there was going to be a tomorrow, I found comfort in my good memories. The good memories were all centered around family, fishing trips, and the beauty and energy that Chicago has. All my memories had the common theme of water as a prominent component which is why water conservation is important to me. Recently we’re learning that data centers being built, despite massive protest, requiring exorbitant amounts of water to be used for cooling, I think water conservation is a going to be a major issue plaguing the United Sates as we move forward. I also want to use Third Coast Pillows to give back to the community by providing opportunities in underprivileged areas. Growing up under the poverty line, I know first-hand how important exposure and opportunities can be, and I would like to give back to the communities that need help.
