Below is our recent interview with Scott Selzer, CEO and Chief Product Architect at StruXure:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to StruXure?

A: StruXure Outdoor™ (formerly Arcadia) is the building industry’s premier designer and manufacturer of high-quality adjustable louvered structures. With patented products like the Pivot, the Slide, the Pivot XL, and a complete gutter system, as well as bonus features designed with advanced technology, our company has become one of the fastest growing privately held businesses in the United States, appearing on the Inc. 5000 list for the past four years. Founded outside of Atlanta, Georgia in 2011, by CEO and Chief Product Architect Scott Selzer, StruXure Outdoor™ has grown to include two major manufacturing facilities in North Georgia and Nevada, with a staff of more than 50 and a massive dealer network that spans from Canada to the Caribbean.

Q: How did you get the idea to bring the indoors out?

A: As a part-time construction worker during summers off from teaching middle schoolers, the majority of my clients brought me outdoor home improvement projects, including decks and patios. The turning point came when a couple asked me for a way to maximize sunlight through a pergola into their home – they wanted the outdoor shade option that a pergola offers, but feared a static structure would block welcomed sunlight into the adjacent indoor spaces. A pivoting louvered roof on the outdoor structure was the optimal solution. And when I couldn’t find an existing product that met my expectations, I designed and fabricated one myself.

Q: You’ve recently announced your company name change to StruXure Outdoor; could you tell us something more?

A: When I came up with “Arcadia,” our former name, I thought it sounded cool. Also, it means a place offering peace and simplicity, which was fitting of what we were trying to achieve with our products at the time. However, ultimately, we became known for the structures we design and manufacture. And though our products continue to facilitate peaceful settings, they also provide outdoor shelter for parties and festive occasions, as well as several commercial uses. Given the evolution of our product offerings, in December 2018, we felt it was time to update our name to match our growing product line and brand.

Q: How did you manage to achieve such tremendous growth and increased marketplace recognition?

A: StruXure’s motto of ‘good isn’t good enough’ is not just a catchy phrase; the concept is integral to our company mission. We never ignore opportunities to innovate as we gain access to new technology and materials, and as new design ideas are cultivated. We are true to our core values of quality, customer service, and innovation. We believe there is no substitute for diligence and hard work, and we never assume success is permanent.

Q: Can you give us insights into your products?

A: Our structures are designed to withstand the elements, and can attach to a home or building, or they can be free-standing. With roof louvers that pivot a full 170°, using ultra-strong, low-maintenance extruded aluminum, and a unique fabrication and construction model, our structures can be sized and adapted to just about any user’s needs. We currently offer three models: the Pivot, the Pivot XL, and the Slide (the only product of its kind on the market that offers pivoting louvers AND the ability to fully slide open for an open sky view. StruXure Outdoor™ has also developed a patented iLouver™ technology that provides users a variety of options for programming and controlling their systems: to open and close at certain times of the day, with four preset positions, and a default to the last known position. The iLouver™ technology can also automatically open and close the roof depending on weather conditions, such as rain and wind. If excessive wind speeds are detected, Hurricane Mode will override all functions and open the louvers to allow for air to freely flow through the louvers. Further, StruXure’s pivoting and interlocking louvered roof technology not only allows the roof to adjust to the sun’s strongest angle, and even fully close, but also offers a one-of-a-kind water management system for wet weather. The louver design creates channels through which the water is diverted to the structure perimeter and down to the ground. This water can be reclaimed if desired.
