Blickfeld Raises $5,7M In Seed Funding, Their LiDAR Technology Can Be A Key Building Block For The Future Of Autonomous Driving

Blickfeld is a provider of cutting-edge LiDAR technology for autonomous mobility and IoT applications. Below is our recent interview with Dr. Florian Petit, the Founder of Blickfeld:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to Blickfeld?

A: Founded in 2017 and based in Munich, Germany, the company has developed proprietary LiDAR technology based on patented silicon MEMS mirrors and commercial off-the-shelf components. The Blickfeld LiDAR product family meets the highest performance requirements at the cost and size needed for mass market adoption. Due to their range of configurable features, the Blickfeld LiDAR product family provides solutions for multiple use-cases.

Q: How would you present the team behind Blickfeld?

A: Two of the founders had built a successful sensor start-up before that has around 50 employees today and is break-even, one a roboticist and has been working on environment perception for many years and the fourth is patent attorney, who immediately saw how important patents are for this technology. They are joined by a team of experienced professionals with renowned expertise in the fields of electronics, optics, MEMS, software, and the automotive industry. Blickfeld really benefits from the tech environment in Munich. There is a huge talent pool thanks to excellent technical universities and the ecosystem of high-tech companies.

Q: You have recently raised $5,7M, could you tell us more about it?

A: The increase from $ 4.3 million to $ 10 million in the seed financing round completed just a few months ago will further accelerate the company’s rapid growth. We have made very good progress with our LiDAR technology in recent months. High international demand confirms the efficiency of the Blickfeld solution. The expansion in seed financing will enable us to bring our first series product to market even faster.

We are convinced that Blickfeld’s LiDAR technology can be a key building block for the future market of autonomous driving. ”We have made very good progress with our LiDAR technology in recent months. Q: What advantage does the company have over its competitors?

A: The problem with today’s LiDAR sensors is the complex design and lack of robustness of existing systems, which leads to high prices and frequent failures. We have significantly simplified the structure and reinvented a core component of the LiDAR. Our innovation is based on a micromechanical mirror manufactured in semiconductor technology (MEMS). It is manufactured completely in silicon at wafer level and is therefore small, lightweight, scalable and ‘solid-state’. What results is a performant, mechanically robust and scalable LiDAR.

Q: What is your main goal at the moment?

A: We want to further accelerate the company’s rapid growth. The expansion in seed financing will enable us to bring our first series product to market even faster. Additionally, we plan on hiring more engineers, automotive experts and computer scientists in the upcoming months, as well as expanding its business-development, marketing and sales teams.
