To learn more about the company we sat down with Philip Lew, the founder and CEO of XBOSoft:

Q: Philip, tell us something more about the company and your history?

A: I’ve alway been passionate about quality products, and as my career developed, I focused that passion on software quality. Everything runs on software now, so software quality is essential to every profession. I founded XBOSoft 10 years ago while I was doing business in China. I had just left a Senior Executive position with a company based in Beijing. One of the company’s clients wanted to continue to work with me as their quality assurance expert. Because they trusted my expertise and my ability to motivate a team, I realized I could start my own company focused on quality assurance. I’d founded companies before so the idea of launching my own company wasn’t foreign to me.

XBOSoft is a services company and doesn’t make or produce testing software. We provide a customized solution to every client’s needs, and can either work with their testing tools or provide cloud-based open source tools if they don’t have any. We work closely with our clients. We really get to know their business, whether it’s healthcare, accounting or other systems. In our 10-year history we’ve never lost a client. A major factor behind our success is the experience and longevity of our team. Many of our team members have been with the company since its early days; we’ve also had employees who left and came back to work for us. This is the foundation of our ‘secret sauce’ as the experience provides deep domain expertise and continuity that leads to better solutions and outcomes for our clients.

Q: Who are the primary users of your consulting and testing services and what are some of the key challenges you are helping them solve?

A: Our customers fall into two main categories: software builders that are either growing rapidly, and existing companies that have QA issues they haven’t been able to solve. We also have some that just need “extra hands” for testing. We can provide services for a wide range of companies by size; our clients include second stage startups and Fortune 1,000 public companies. We test all types of software but we’ve built a cluster of clients in healthcare and financial services. We’ve developed particular expertise with accounting software. That means that our clients don’t have to teach us their business. We know what they do and how to help them.

Many times a new client will have the symptoms of a QA problem but they don’t know how to solve it. They’re looking for a company with a lot of experience in solving tricky QA issues. Or they are looking for a firm with deep expertise in certain areas like performance or automation, both of which we specialize in.

Q: Can you give us more insights into your testing services?

A: We start by having a dialog with our customers to find out more about their problem and their current QA and development process and how we fit in. For instance, some companies already own testing tools and we can adapt to those. If they don’t own testing tools or don’t have have a preference, we provide custom built frameworks based on open source tools. One tool we often work with is JMeter, an automated performance testing tool. JMeter can be difficult to use for people who aren’t familiar with it. It’s difficult to configure correctly and it also provides large amounts of data that can be hard to analyze. We know how to analyze the data properly and efficiently because of our long experience with the tool.

Q: What makes XBOSoft a good choice?

A: Our depth of domain expertise and technical expertise are perhaps the strongest assets that we bring to an engagement. We’ve had very low turnover among our testers, which gives us the ability to retain knowledge and develop close relationships with our clients. With deeper relationships, we can go far beyond discussing requirements and actually forecast and avoid potential problems that our clients can’t always see.

Q: What are your plans for next 6-8 months?

A: We have had good growth over the last few years, and we want to continue to build on that growth while keeping our thumb on the industry’s pulse. A particular objective is to continue to deepen our domain expertise in the healthcare and accounting industries while also building our technical focus on open source automation, performance, security tool sets on mobile and web platforms.

Q: Can you describe a typical engagement?

A: Our typical engagement lasts many years and starts with a single project and grows over time as the relationship grows. We started working with a company called Mobile MedSoft about 6-7 years ago. That engagement began with helping them improve an existing software, and evolved into working with them from the start on a new product. They were automating an electronic health records tracking system for long term care pharmacies. A particular challenge was properly managing prescription labeling as the patients’ needs and context changed. Our work on that product has evolved into testing other products for them. For instance, they developed an iPad application that lets nurses record vitals and medication tracking on the spot rather than doing manual note taking and then inputting into a system. We provide the QA testing for the new product and worked with them from the beginning on the iPad application software so that QA was built into the product from the beginning. Our services have helped them streamline their development process so they can release products to the market more quickly and with fewer defects.
