Deep Breathe Aims To Enable Diagnosis Of Critical Injuries Through AI-Powered Portable Ultrasound

Below is our recent interview with Brooke Schidowka from Deep Breathe:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to your company?

A: Deep Breathe is on a mission to enable frontline diagnosis of critical injuries and ailments through AI-powered portable ultrasound. Our platform transforms handheld ultrasound into a rapid triage and diagnostic tool, delivering expert-level interpretation without the need for extensive training. ATLAS, our flagship solution, provides real-time detection of life-threatening torso injuries such as pneumothorax, thereby reducing unnecessary procedures and improving outcomes during the critical first hour of care. By equipping clinicians and first responders with reliable, immediate diagnostics, ATLAS enhances decision-making in challenging environments and supports timely, informed care delivery.

Q: What makes you the best choice? How are you unique?

A: As an example, the current standard of diagnostic care for identifying abnormalities in the lungs is Chest X-Ray, which surprisingly has only a 46% (1) accuracy. When paired with hand held ultrasound, Deep Breathe’s diagnostic accuracy is 94% (2,3) . What makes us truly unique is that we bring accurate diagnostics directly to the point of care in a very efficient manner, without the need for special training. Founded by a global leader in point-of-care ultrasound, built on a proprietary database of lung ultrasound images, and powered by our in-house machine learning and engineering expertise—Deep Breathe is democratizing access to fast, accurate diagnostics.

Q: Who is your ideal client and why?

A: Deep Breathe is designed for users ranging from novices to trained professionals across diverse industries. Our technology is highly adaptable and built for use in any environment – no Wi-Fi connection is required to perform detection scans. Compact and truly pocket-sized, it has been validated in pre-hospital settings and includes a built-in guidance tool that highlights key aspects of the detection process for novice users while masking unnecessary ultrasound details to simplify interpretation. From bedside hospital care to frontline field medicine, Deep Breathe delivers reliable diagnostic insights wherever they’re needed.

Q: What can we expect from you in the next 6 months? What are your plans?

A: Within the next 6 months, our team will continue to expand our current diagnostic platform to include a suite of diagnostic capabilities across a diverse range of lung and torso abnormalities. Additionally, we will continue on our regulatory pathways in the US, Canada and the EU in addition. In the coming months, we’ll continue advancing on the innovation and success of our current models as we develop our comprehensive diagnostic platform.

Q: What is the best thing about your company that people might not know about?

A: Our multidisciplinary team is made up of passionate, dedicated, and curious individuals who continually push the boundaries of healthcare and technology. With expertise spanning medicine, software engineering, machine learning, regulatory affairs, data science, and sector-specific advisory, our team brings together innovation and a shared commitment to improving patient care. The best part of Deep Breathe is the people- the team that keeps it all moving forward.
