Listen to this article

Dremel DigiLab is a new Dremel brand, focused on providing educators and students with cutting-edge technology for STEM education. Founded in 1934, Dremel is the industry standard in leadership and excellence for versatile tools & systems. Dremel DigiLab’s 3D printers expand the brand’s reach from the workshop to the classroom, while continuing to empower makers through creativity, precision, and project enjoyment. Below is our interview with Satish Subramanian, Marketing Manager at Dremel DigiLab:

Q: What’s the best thing about Dremel that people might not know about?

A: Dremel has been synonymous with rotary tools for the past 85 years, so people are always caught off guard when they find out we are venturing into different areas such as 3D printing. However, when they think about it for a minute it makes complete sense. We have been a longstanding leader in the maker movement, so it’s only natural that our products and services will evolve to fit the needs of the new generation of makers.

The 2nd best kept secret is that Dremel is owned by Bosch, a global innovation powerhouse that comes out with 22 patents per working day. The ability to leverage Bosch’s technology and knowledge base is tremendously advantageous in delivering value to our customers.

Q: You’ve recently announced your partnership with Workbench; tell us something more?

A: Workbench is an extremely valuable partner for us, enabling us to develop and expand our learning community, Dremel DigiRoom, for teachers and students to easily integrate 3D printing into the classroom. Their commitment to expand project-based learning into today’s curriculum will help build the next generation of innovators, and we are excited to be a part of that.

3D printing is just one enabler of project-based learning and general STEM curriculum. There are many other aspects that can be explored by technologies from other ed tech leaders who are already on the workbench platform, such as Sphero and SparkFun. Things really get interesting when schools have more than one of these technologies, as they all build on each other. For example, 3D printing by itself can create static objects that typically require a person to power. However, the capabilities and student learning increases tenfold when you add electronics and programming.

Q: Could you give us more insights into Dremel DigiLab?

A: The new brand, Dremel DigiLab, is our official commitment to expanding the Dremel brand beyond its traditional power tools. Blended from the words “Digital” and “Laboratory”, Dremel DigiLab showcases our latest steps into product categories like desktop 3D printers that have increasing focuses on digital competencies and technologies.

The latest addition to our portfolio is our newest 3D printer, the 3D45, that is geared for advanced users in higher education and industry. Moving beyond just PLA, the 3D45 is also currently capable of printing nylon and Eco-ABS, with other advanced filaments coming in the near future. The 3D45, which is currently on pre-sale and shipping in August, was our biggest step into the 3D printing market and was the true catalyst for creating the new Dremel DigiLab brand.

Q: What are your key differentiators?

A: We have very high standards to ensure our 3D printers are the most reliable, easiest-to-use, and supported 3D printers on the market. Some examples of our commitment to these tenants are:

• Developing a best-in-class extruder that enables printing for countless hours without any issues
• Offering professional development, standards-based lesson plans, and the best packaged printer for easy installation and implementation
• Leveraging the established Dremel support team located in Wisconsin, allowing us to have an average call pickup time of 45 seconds

There are many 3D printers on the market, so it can sometimes be a challenge to convince someone to choose a Dremel 3D printer for their school. However, once an educator gets their hands on one of our printers, they usually love it and tell their friends to give us a call. In addition, we are always gathering feedback from our users on how to improve and we are actively working on updating our existing models to include features and services that will make our printers even more reliable, easy-to-use, and supported.

Q: What are your plans for the next 3 months?

A: Our new 3D45 3D printer is currently on pre-sale until it ships in August, so we are currently engaging with industry leaders and higher education institutions to create a successful launch.

As far as upcoming product launches go, I can’t be too specific. However, I will say that you should have your cameras ready for the New York Maker Faire in September.
