Engineering Simulation Solution Provider SimScale Democratizes Virtual Testing In The AEC Industry

Listen to this article

SimScale is the provider of an engineering simulation solution that is revolutionizing the design validation process. Accessible via a standard web browser, the SimScale platform allows engineers and designers to virtually test performance, optimize durability or improve the efficiency of their designs long before building a physical prototype.

To learn more about the company we sat down with Agata Krzysztofik, Chief Marketing Officer at SimScale:

Agata Krzysztofik

Q: Could you tell us something about your history?

A: Founded in 2012, SimScale is an integral part of the design validation process for thousands of successful companies worldwide and over 100,000 individual users across industries such as AEC (architecture, engineering and construction), HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning), electronics, consumer goods, and energy.

Q: How does SimScale democratize virtual testing in the AEC industry?

A: Many of the civil engineers and mechanical engineers working in the AEC industry still rely on hand calculations, rules of thumb or wind tunnel testing results to assess the performance of their design. This is driven by the fact that traditional, on-premises engineering simulation software is extremely expensive, requires an expert knowledge in order to be properly utilized, and creates a lot of overhead when it comes to hardware requirements, installation, and maintenance.

Our goal at SimScale is to democratize virtual testing in the AEC industry, by enabling every engineer to take a full advantage of engineering simulation technology—independent of their budget, available hardware and know-how. We have been able to achieve it by developing a fully cloud-based engineering simulation platform with zero hardware and software footprint, easy to use, and available at the fraction of the price of other tools.

With help of SimScale, civil engineers can run virtual tunnel testing of wind loads on buildings and structures, while mechanical engineers can simulate the performance of their HVAC applications or assess the energy efficiency in buildings in order to ensure compliance against required standards such as, for example, ASHRAE 90.1 or ASHRAE 62.1.

Q: How does SimScale solve diverse design challenges in the AEC industry?

A: Since last year, we are investing heavily in optimizing SimScale for the AEC industry and have been expanding the functionality in order to be able to solve design challenges across various AEC applications, from predictions of wind load on buildings, pedestrian comfort assessment, smoke propagation analysis in commercial spaces like garages or shopping malls, and natural ventilation testing, to validation of HVAC systems and parts. We approach each of our customers individually and make sure that we can fully understand the specific design challenge that they are trying to solve. To ensure their success, we offer dedicated support as well as consulting services. As a result, we are pleased to see that more and more companies in AEC are trusting SimScale with their designs. This also includes some of the largest AEC companies in the world like WSP and Arup, who became SimScale customers in 2017.

To gain a better understanding of the AEC design challenges that can be solved with SimScale, I highly encourage everyone interested to check our webinars & workshops. We try to maintain a regular schedule of free online webinars during which we teach engineers how they can leverage CFD simulation for the optimization of their designs.

Q: What are your plans for next six months?

A: We plan to actively continue developing additional features that are in particular demand by the AEC industry. We also want to further simplify the usage of SimScale. This involves more robust preparation of CAD data to achieve reliable simulation results as quickly as possible, additional collaboration functionalities for organizations, and more.

In addition to this, we will also continue our collaboration with various HVAC and building organizations globally in order to ensure that using SimScale can help engineers achieve their necessary accreditations.

Q: What’s the one thing about SimScale that people might not know about?

A: While the vast majority of engineering simulation software solutions can only run on Windows or Linux operating systems, since SimScale runs in the web browser, it can also be used by Mac OS users.
