Epson WorkForce Pro WF-C869R Competitive Comparison

Listen to this article

Basat Khalifa, CEO of DuraFast Label Company, joins us today to talk about a few of the hottest business printers on the market. Specifically, he’s sharing information about the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-C869R, HP Laser Jet Enterprise M750N, and Xerox Phaser 7100DN.

Basat KhalifaQ: Basat, tell us please aren’t all printers pretty much the same these days?

A: Not exactly. For starters, these are all what we call enterprise printers. They are built for shared network printing in a large office environment and are expected to print up to 8,000 or more pages per month. As such, they need to have a larger-than-normal page capacity. For example, a traditional desktop laser printer might have one or two 250-page paper trays whereas enterprise printers have multiple paper trays for a total paper capacity of nearly two or three thousand pages. In addition, you have different print technologies to consider such as laser or inkjet. Other concerns include print speed (in an office environment, this is crucial for productivity), energy consumption, and even how often you must change the toner.

Q: These are all printers from major printer manufacturers. Would you say they’re comparably equipped?

A: Yes, they’re all in the same class and considered competitors to one another. There are a few key differences though. For example, the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-C869R is an inkjet-based multifunction printer whereas the other two are laser printers only.

Q: So, the tradeoff is, get an inkjet printer that can print, copy, scan and fax or a laser printer that prints only?

A: You could say that, but the fact that the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-C869R is an inkjet printer isn’t a negative.

Q: Well, don’t inkjet use a lot of ink compared to toner? Aren’t they slower and more expensive to operate?

A: In many cases, you’re right. However, with the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-C869R, these concerns are outdated. You see, Epson’s PrecisionCore technology and new Replaceable Ink Pack System change everything. The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-C869R is nearly as fast — 24 ISO pages per minute — as the HP Laser Jet Enterprise M750N and the Xerox Phaser 7100DN, which both have a print speed of 30 ISO pages per minute. The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-C869R has the fastest “first page out” time of 6 seconds for black and 6.5 seconds for color. The other two printers are slower at 9 through 11 seconds.

As far as ink versus toner consumption, this will blow you away. The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-C869R has a black supply yield of 86,000 pages while the HP Laser Jet Enterprise M750N’s is only 13,500 and the Xerox Phaser 7100DN’s is just 10,000 pages. For color, the yields are similar with the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-C869R yielding 84,000 pages and the HP Laser Jet Enterprise M750N yielding 15,000 and the Xerox Phaser 7100DN yielding just 9,000 pages. This means you’ll need to change the toner cartridges in the HP and Xerox printers about a half a dozen times for every ink cartridge change in the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-C869R.

Q: Wow, that’s a big change! How do they do that?

A: Yes, it’s a huge difference. Epson’s Replaceable Ink Pack System is one of the secret ingredients here. These packs are much larger than your typical ink cartridge, so not only do you get more ink for the money (resulting in cost savings), you don’t have to hassle with running out of ink and swapping cartridges all the time.

Another way the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-C869R is more economical is via its power consumption. It’s Energy Star qualified and consumes just 40 watts when printing compared to more than 650 watts for the HP Laser Jet Enterprise M750N and the Xerox Phaser 7100DN. You’ll use up to 16 times more energy with the HP and Xerox printers compared to the Epson.

Q: You mentioned earlier that the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-C869R is a multifunction printer?

A: Yes. The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-C869R prints, scans, copies, and faxes, giving it yet another advantage over the Xerox Phaser 7100DN and the HP Laser Jet Enterprise M750N.

Q: Of the three, which is the best buy?

A: As you might have guessed, DuraFast Label Company recommends the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-C869R over the other two contenders. All three are great enterprise printers, but the Epson is much more economical to own and operate. Plus, it prints, copies, scans, and faxes while the others do not. It produces high resolution (4800dpi) full color documents nearly as fast as the laser printers using pigment inks, which resist fading for generations.
