Below is our interview with Tamara Hostal, Founder – CEO and Managing Director at ESMOD Dubai:
Q: Tamara, how many fashion graduates does ESMOD have a year?
A: ESMOD Dubai produces an average of 25 Graduates per year.
Q: Does ESMOD have many international students (outside the UAE)? Where do they come from?
A: ESMOD Dubai student body consist of about 55 nationalities including 45% of UAE nationals historically foreign students nationalities were from the surrounding countries, for the last 5 years due to the increasing awareness of ESMOD Dubai being the only school fully dedicated to fashion education in the GCC, our Alumni’s brands success abroad, their knowhow acknowledged by the industry and Dubai becoming an attractive study abroad destination, our foreign students have come from various countries, east Asia, Africa, Europe etc such as Russia, Kazakhstan, China, South Africa, Australia, Bulgaria, France, UK, Nigeria, Japan.

Q: How does ESMOD Dubai, help prepare the students for the global industry? How?
A: ESMOD is the only fashion education network in the world with 23 schools located in 15 countries. Over 8000 Alumni are serving the global industry worldwide, over 210 ESMOD INTERNATIONAL fashion shows have been held in almost 40 years, 21 graduation fashion shows are held yearly, ESMOD is one of the 3 French schools selected by the ELLE Foundation, 6600 companies are referenced with close to 19,000 professional contacts internationaly.
The above figures reflect ESMOD capacity to expose its students to to the global industry and to showcase their capacity as creators but also as technicians to smoothly integrate fashion brands either as interns or employees. Thanks to our programs updated yearly to follow the ever changing trends and in response from industry feedback and demands.
A particularity of ESMOD Dubai is to have focused right from the start on the « after ESMOD » for its alumni. Supporting them in their business entrepreneurship.
This is by creating the first Emerging Designers Incubator in the GCC, if not worldwide supporting our Alumni in the establishment of their labels, in terms of creative consultancy, marketing, communication, merchandising, pricing through an Alumni retail store that we launched back in 2012. Educating is one thing, but our reward is what do Alumni do with the skills that we have provided to them, their success after ESMOD is our success.
Another initiative that we just launched are partnership with fashion weeks, in particular with Vancouver Fashion Week Ceo/Producer who was invited as Jury member for the graduation 2016 to select 1 student and her collection to be showcased free of charge next september 2016 for SS17.
He was thrilled by some of the collections actually selected 2 of our graduates Marie Latuilerie French and Paresa Yaaseen from Afghanistan.
This is a far as we go to expose our Alumni internationally to buyers and medias.

Q: What support is there for graduating designers in Dubai?
A: As mentionned above, our support to Alumni after graduation through our dedicated retail store, the international exposure that we offer to them by showcasing their first collections in fashion weeks, promoting them and their collections through our social media, who wouldn’t want to benefit from our cumulated 110 000 followers !

Q: What are the components to producing a successful designer at ESMOD Dubai?
A: Component number 1: is limiting the number of students per class, the ESMOD curriculum is fully hands on, it is demonstration based, teachers demonstrate each steps to the students, our dedicated and passionate teachers repeat as many times as needed, then check the students progress and tasks one by one throughout the day, one cannot provide its time and expertise individually to a too large number of students.
Component number 2: Patience, students are students, quality in fashion lies in details and precision it takes time to shape a young professional.
Component number 3: to not only teach design, but garment making, pattern making at an engineering level, at the end of the day we are talking about garment in this industry, focusing on teaching creativity without focusing on turning an idea into a real well made garment is not ESMOD.
Our students design and produce that’s what we stand for.
Q: What are ESMOD Dubai plans for the near future?
A: We are expanding to Dubai Design District to join the design community of Dubai.
