Below is our recent interview with Carlos Cruz, CEO of Clicktool:

Q: In brief, what is Clicktool?

A: Clicktool is a data tracking and management software that helps marketers run more effective campaigns. Our software is particularly unique among data tracking toolkits in that it’s super easy to use and eliminates the need for redirects entirely. For those of you who are not aware, a redirect is when the user clicks on a link that takes them to a totally useless page before re-routing them to the product page, where they actually want to be. Redirects are not just annoying to consumers, but they are also flagged by Google, Facebook, and other traffic sources when it’s detected that the marketer is using different redirects for the same campaign.

This unfortunate “glitch” in the system limits digital marketers from testing different landing pages. Experimentation is key to success, so by eliminating the need for redirects entirely, we free digital marketers up to be able to perform these tests, and discover the most effective strategy for their campaigns.

Q: How did you get into digital marketing?

A: I’m an affiliate marketer myself, and so I know the problems faced by marketers inside and out. I also have many friends in this sphere, and over time I grew tired of hearing complaints about the same problems: pages getting flagged by Facebook for using redirects and tracking software that is so complicated that you have to be a coder to use it. I couldn’t find any existing solutions that adequately addressed these issues, so I decided to develop Clicktool.

Q: Why is data so important in today’s day and age?

A: The digital economy has become synonymous with the global economy, so the importance of data cannot be underscored enough. Going one step further is the importance of understanding how to leverage data to grow your business. Many companies and individual marketers today suffer from data overload. They use tracking software but then have no idea how to interpret the results and harness those insights to their advantage. Clicktool makes all of that easy by keeping all campaign data in one accessible location instead of spread across multiple platforms, and offering data interpretation tools and suggestions on what actions are likely to lead to the best results.

Q: Can you walk us through an example of how Clicktool might help a marketer change his/her course of action?

A: Imagine you are an affiliate marketer who writes reviews for books published by indie authors. When you first started out, writing and posting your thoughts on an undiscovered crime thriller or gem of a fantasy series was purely a hobby, but you realized that you could monetize your passion by becoming an Amazon Affiliate. Sure enough, when you included links on your blog post leading people to where they could purchase the books on Amazon, the money started rolling in. This income allowed you to incorporate more of a business mindset, and so you decided to expand your audience through launching a paid Facebook campaign. Facebook offers some data about geographic location of your audience, what type of device they are using, etc., but Facebook doesn’t provide any data about what happens when your customers leave the social networking site to visit your blog.

This is where Clicktool comes into play. Clicktool fills the void left by Facebook’s analytics by offering data on all your visitors’ actions while on your site. This tool helps you connect the dots and see what audience demographics are not just visiting your blog but actually buying products. Using Clicktool-provided insights, you discover that more people from Texas are making purchases based on your Facebook ads than any other geographic group. That’s key information that enables you to shift more of your marketing dollars to targeting people in Texas instead of New Hampshire where people are clicking on your ad but not following through on making a purchase.

Q: Why is usability so important?

A: If the software isn’t easy to use, it doesn’t matter how great it is in tracking data, because people won’t be able to figure out how to harness its capabilities for their own advantage. Not everyone wants to be a software developer. That’s why we’re dedicated to providing an intuitive software that meets the needs of marketers regardless of whether or not they have a background in coding.

Q: Do you have any advice for those wanting to get involved in affiliate marketing?

A: The first priority for anyone looking to start making money as an affiliate marketer is to find a market that you are passionate about exploring; after all, you may spend years creating content in promotion for various products in your specific industry. The second piece of advice I would offer is to make sure your chosen market has the potential to be lucrative, meaning there is an audience but the space isn’t oversaturated with other affiliate marketers doing the same thing. We call this finding a niche. For example, if you’re interested in health and wellness, try to narrow your focus to a subdivision of the wellness industry, such as aromatherapy. Finally, find an affiliate network or program that will offer the support you need to grow your business.
