Francis Cordor, CEO of FrancordSoft, is passionate about Africa’s emergence into the 21st century. He wants to see Africa thrive, and most importantly, its citizens. To that end, he developed NumberTrend, a job search engine that helps African job seekers throughout the continent and from its large diaspora find rewarding jobs in Africa.

Q: Why does Africa need something like NumberTrend?

A: Just like here in the states, job search engines make it easier to find good jobs. It expands your opportunities and you can conduct an exhaustive search from the comfort of your computer or mobile phone. Africa’s job market is complicated, to say the least. For starters, you have double-digit youth unemployment rates — and youth represents about half of the population. We need to get the young population working and engaged if we want to solve Africa’s other problems. And I’m not talking about making and selling trinkets to tourists. I’m talking about technology, infrastructure, logistics, and healthcare jobs. These are jobs that will help transform Africa and provide young professionals with a livelihood they’ll enjoy and prosper in — jobs that will entice the brightest young workers to stay in Africa rather than leave in search of better opportunities.

Q: Is that a problem if they leave?

A: On an individual level, not necessarily. For those who have the means, leaving Africa can improve their job prospects, and as a result, the quality of their lives. In fact, a 2017 Pew Research Center survey revealed that if they had the means and opportunity to live in another country, 75 percent of the population of Ghana said they’d go. 74 percent from Nigeria, 54 percent from Kenya, and 51 percent from South Africa said the same. And many are doing it.

Migration from Africa to Europe, the United States, and other parts of the world is a huge problem right now, on many levels. Not only do you have the humanitarian crisis with thousands of migrant deaths each year in the Mediterranean, you have what’s known as the “brain drain” effect. This means the smartest and most talented professionals seek work off the continent where their talents are valued and rewarded. If you recall the Ebola crisis, you may remember just how few doctors African countries like Liberia have to serve their populations.

Q: How few are there? What kind of numbers are we talking about?

A: Liberia had just 339 doctors as of September 2017 for a population of 4.5 million residents. I’ve heard reports that there are only two radiologists in the entire country, just 12 surgeons, and one ear, nose, and throat specialist. The pay is low and the working conditions poor. Meanwhile, doctors are highly respected and valued in other countries — and well paid. Where would you rather work? Given a choice between low pay, poor working conditions, and a life of poverty and moving to a country that respects, values, and rewards you for your work, what would you choose?

Q: So, how does NumberTrend intend to solve these problems?

A: We can play a role in improving how Africans find work while also improving employment practices. Africa is a growing and developing continent with job opportunities in a variety of sectors ranging from agriculture, retail, construction, and hospitality jobs to highly skilled positions in healthcare, IT, and telecommunications. Our website and mobile app make it easy for job seekers to filter their searches to match their preferences.

Meanwhile, NumberTrend features an anonymous review component, similar to GlassDoor, that allows former and current employees to leave real-world reviews about their experiences with an employer. This transparency helps the best employers to stand out while prompting others to improve if they want to compete for the best employees. Thus, job seekers can avoid wasting their time pursuing undesirable jobs, focusing only on those highly rated employers who would be a good fit.

Q: Do job seekers need to be based in Africa to use NumberTrend?

A: Not at all. Africans living off the continent but yearning for home now have a tool to help them find rewarding jobs. The African diaspora is highly educated, making these professionals attractive candidates to employers. Not only do they have the desired expertise, as Africans, they are comfortable with local customs.

Q: How does NumberTrend work as far as if I wanted to look for a job? Is it free?

A: NumberTrend is free to all job seekers. You can conduct a job search without an account. Signing up for a free account allows you to save your favorites, create a detailed profile, post employer reviews, and apply for jobs. When you post an employer review, it’s anonymous. Therefore, employers, whether your current employer or one who is considering hiring you, will not know you posted a review.

Q: What about for employers?

A: We also have a free plan for employers where they can post basic job listings, receive applications, and respond to reviews. Employers can also sign up for more robust plans for a monthly fee as well as purchase display ads to get even greater exposure.
