Listen to this article

We recently met with Pritesh Parekh, Chief Trust & Security Officer of Virtustream, to talk shop on enterprise cloud security and for his perspectives on a few hot topics for 2021, including the importance for businesses to clearly understand their cloud security posture. We also discussed the value that expert security and compliance services can provide to IT organizations, as well as what we can expect to see from Virtustream as the cloud service provider – recognized in 2020 as a leader for hosting mission-critical applications – heads into the new year. See the following Q&A for the result of our insightful interview with Pritesh.

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to Virtustream and your team’s role?

A: Keeping it simple, Virtustream is an enterprise-class cloud company that helps organizations meet their business objectives by migrating and running their mission-critical applications in the cloud. Mission-critical expertise is in our DNA for managing applications like those from SAP or from Epic in the healthcare space. My team specifically serves two major roles: leading the development of our security services and tools, and ensuring that our overall business and portfolios align to our Four Tenets of Trust. These four pillars – security, compliance, privacy and transparency – are essential to Virtustream’s success in the market. And, equally important to us, these tenets are foundational to our productive and trusting relationships with customers and partners.

Q: With the massive movement to remote workforces in 2020, bad actors ramped up their attacks to take advantage of gaps in the armor. How important is it for enterprise companies of all sizes to maintain a comprehensive understanding of their cloud security posture?

A: We’ve seen so many enterprises expedite their digital transformation plans because of the global orders for employees to work from home. This IT mandate hit every country around the world and, for most companies, it has required the expansion of their cloud footprints. These macro conditions are driving new, never-before-seen risks that require expanded risk management and comprehensive security management. To adapt, businesses must prioritize security, agility and resiliency. With these changes, however, sophisticated cyberattacks are growing fast as well, pushing the need to shift from a reactive stance to a stronger proactive security posture by maintaining strong security postures as well as bringing consistency to their security mechanisms – particularly when considering multicloud environments. With expert cloud security services, organizations can implement changes daily to stay ahead of emerging threats. Without this kind of agility and resiliency, it will be difficult for organizations to keep up with the bad actors.

Q: Many organizations lack the expertise and capabilities necessary to maintain a holistic view of their security posture across complex multicloud environments. What are the top benefits of using a managed services provider for cloud security posture management?

A: Despite significant advancements and the number of cybersecurity tools available today, cyberattacks continue to make headlines. Most organizations manage a plethora of tools, platforms and services to maintain their security posture. However, managing so many variables across several cloud platforms and data centers is incredibly hard – this complexity can result in a fragmented ecosystem. As a result, it is nearly impossible to achieve a holistic security posture for all digital assets. Therefore, there is a strong need to unify security processes and controls across all environments. IT leaders should look for cloud service providers who can provide businesses with a security platform to streamline security processes, provide comprehensive insights and management capabilities, and consistently manage their security posture across multicloud environments.

Q: Can you provide our readers more details about Virtustream’s own solutions in this space. Last year, you introduced xStreamCare Services™ for Security and Compliance and your new Trust Platform. Which of your customers can best benefit from these services?

A: Virtustream’s xStreamCare Services for Security and Compliance bring together advanced security management and monitoring as well as expert consulting services under its new Trust Platform, a unified security and compliance management portal. These new solutions provide businesses with near real-time visibility into intrusion attempts, identify vulnerabilities, manage security logs and more.

When developing these solutions, we wanted to take a broader view of security and deliver a holistic approach to our customers. By providing customers with the tools and services necessary for them to be more proactive and to simplify their approach to cloud security overall, we’re seeing that proactive action can be taken before cyberattacks are able to impact a business. It’s a multicloud world today, so we’ve worked hard to deliver a unified, consistent security posture for multicloud environments.

Q: What can we expect from Virtustream on the security front in 2021?

A: In the upcoming year, foundational to everything we do will be our laser-focus on protecting our customers’ IT environments and data in the cloud, supported by our deep and trusted relationships. As one facet of this focus, we have formed a security advisory board to maintain an open line of communication for customers to provide critical input, to better understand their quickly evolving needs and concerns, and to directly infuse their feedback into our innovation and development roadmaps. This year will also see increased investments in our portfolio of security and compliance services and solutions, as well as planned enhancements to our security posture management capabilities for multicloud workloads. We’re optimistic for what 2021 has in store for the cloud market, particularly as more mission-critical workloads make their way to the clouds, which is an area of deep expertise for Virtustream.
