HelloTalk is a global language and cultural exchange app. Similar to platforms such as WeChat or Facebook, HelloTalk promotes language learning and cultural exchange in a safe, open community. Below is our recent interview with Zack Ngai, the Founder of HelloTalk:

Q: Zack, tell us something more about HelloTalk?

A: HelloTalk users can connect with native speakers and exchange over 200 languages including English, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Portuguese, German, Italian, Russian, Arabic, for free! HelloTalk also supports constructed languages such as Dothraki and Klingon, as well as many minority languages.

HelloTalk’s vision is to connect cultures and celebrate diversity around the world by providing a platform for conversation, friendship and learning in a welcoming and supportive global community.

Q: You’ve recently raised nearly $3M as HelloTalk app surpassed 10 million registered users; could you tell us something more?

A: Recognizing HelloTalk’s global language platform potential, Seven Sea Partners leads HelloTalk’s US$3 million Pre-A round investment. Founded by Jeff Xiong, former CTO of WeChat developer, Tencent, Seven Sea Partners was attracted by HelloTalk’s potential and positioning as a “vertical segment WeChat for the global language community.” Xiong stated, “WeChat is the most advanced platform app in the world, with numerous services running on top through official accounts and mini-programs. There is huge potential for apps adopting WeChat’s model for vertical segments, and I see HelloTalk as the front-runner for global language learning segments.”

Q: How do you make it so easy to study a new language?

A: HelloTalk focuses on the community for language exchange rather than language learning through a set language course alone. Language acquisition happens naturally when the goal is to communicate interests, culture and shared experience- making it easier and fun for users to participate in real life conversation exchange. However, HelloTalk aims to expand the need for on-demand language study alongside language exchange the near future.

Q: What can we expect from HelloTalk in the future?

A: HelloTalk will integrate new language tools to match different learning styles for the benefit of users and teachers. An English grammar bot for grammar correction will improve users’ conversation experience. This is available through the app as well as online through the HelloTalk website. In addition, HelloTalk will facilitate in-app bitesize language lessons to further assist the language learning experience. There are many services for language learning online and HelloTalk will open their platform to these providers who can make their content available to high-quality language learners. Finally, there will be a space for teachers to build a profile and promote themselves through paid group classes. Together these new services aim to enrich the experience of HelloTalk for the wide variety of users out there.
