How did Blue Marble get started? Well, quite literally, I had one of those classic, “aha” moments … just like in the movies, really! It started with a picture in my mind’s eye of a small technical device, used in a way that is completely different from the way that it was ever intended to be used. I applied for a patent for that device and for several other inventions. Now, I had worked for large, hi-tech aerospace and Silicon Valley Internet companies for years yet I had always wanted to engage in work that contributed to deep and recurring life goals that I felt most passionate about: technology, environment, science, and people. I needed to share my work with the world. I needed to do what I had always done, to work with others to capture and analyze data over the surface of the earth. But now I would use my own computers and my system to “paint” the earth with life, water, and plants.
