Listen to this article

Below is our recent interview with Jack Ward, Owner of Three Pines Wood:

Q: Please provide our readers with a brief introduction to Three Pines Wood Co.

A: Three Pines Wood Co. is a custom wood shop in Ramona, California that takes pride in delivering one-of-a-kind, heirloom-quality wood projects. We build custom furniture, cabinetry, mantels, and much more for clients in Ramona, Poway, and San Diego. We approach each project with a fresh perspective and collaborate with each client to ensure that what we deliver perfectly matches their style and fits their space. This collaborative design process takes time, but the result is that each piece is uniquely made.

Many of our clients have tried to find what they want from big box and retail stores, but are unable to locate products that meet their expectations for quality and design. We are able to give them pieces that are made to their exact specifications, from any type of wood they choose, and with the custom details they want.

Q: What can customers expect when they choose you for a custom furniture build?

A: With furniture in particular, quality is what most customers are looking for. Ideally, our customers want heirloom-quality furniture that exactly matches their needs. Our San Diego clients appreciate the fact that we build very high-quality furniture, and are often surprised that our prices are similar to the prices charged by mid-range to high-end retail stores for their mass-produced options.

There is a lot of interaction between our company and our clients during the entire design and building process. We want to make sure our clients get the exact piece they are envisioning. We meet with them to discuss details and take accurate measurements. We present them with realistic renderings of our designs, and provide them with regular updates during the building process.

With my engineering background, I bring a level of precision and attention to detail that you don’t see many other places.

Q: Who is your ideal customer and why?

A: Our ideal customer is someone looking for pieces that are of high quality and something that they will want to enjoy for a long time. We also tend to work well with customers who want unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that they can’t find in stores or online.

Commissioning us to build custom cabinets, mantels, furniture, and other pieces can be an investment, but our clients are able to get exactly what they want, and can then enjoy them for years to come.

Q: What advantage does Three Pines Wood Co. have over its competitors? What makes you different?

A: Unlike many of the seemingly similar companies in our area, my shop provides a very different customer experience. We accept only a small number of projects so that we can create a personalized experience for each client. We ask clients to be involved in the whole process, or at least as much of it as they want. Some clients appreciate weekly progress updates and enjoy being part of the design decisions along the way. Some like to come with us to choose materials or join us at the sawmill to personally select the wood slabs from which we’ll build their furniture. Other clients aren’t looking to be that involved. They just want to discuss a few design parameters and then prefer to have us handle everything from there. The fundamental difference is that most woodworking companies are project oriented, where we are a client-focused shop.

Q: What can we expect to see from Three Pines as 2021 unfolds??

A: This is a big year for us. We’re bringing a lot of woodworking services to the local market so that we can quickly gain an understanding for the project types that San Diegans most want right now. With our skills, experience, equipment, and access to raw materials, we are able to build almost anything, but we are looking to better understand the market so that we can grow the company wisely.

This year we are also working to further expand our website. The site serves us well currently, but we have plans to expand the portfolio, so that prospective clients can easily see the wide range of projects we’ve completed for San Diego homes and businesses. We’ve found that clients really enjoy being able to look through completed projects to get ideas and inspiration for their own projects. We are also adding an eCommerce shop to our site so customers can purchase smaller pieces, handcrafted décor, and other products that don’t require as much customization.
