Q: For those who haven’t heard of it, what is the best way to describe Jalon?
A: Jalon accelerates innovative solutions for sustainable and intelligent mobility in the Montreal area. To do that, we’re making headway on several fronts: we’re guiding start-ups and businesses that work in sustainable mobility, we’re helping to develop an e-bike urban delivery pilot project in downtown Montreal called Projet Colibri (ed.note : Colibri means Hummingbird in French), and we’re creating an open data library that will benefit the mobility ecosystem in Quebec. We are also interested in autonomous vehicles used in a shared framework such as a shuttle system. We also showcase what businesses in the mobility industry are doing and help them network with like-minded companies.
Q: The very first edition of the Jalon Mobility Awards was held on October 17, 2019. Could you tell us more about it?
A: We wanted to celebrate the innovations and efforts to drive change in smart and sustainable mobility. Almost 60 businesses from various sectors took part with 105 projects submitted in all, which ranged from autonomous cars to public transit to active mobility and more. We awarded projects in eight different categories and also distributed special mentions and prizes. The results of the projects are in our event program, which will be translated into English in the coming weeks.

Q: What are the complex issues around sustainability and mobility of tomorrow?
A: Transportation is responsible for nearly half of the GHG emissions in Québec. So the guidance, support and platforms that we offer businesses to help accelerate their smart and sustainable mobility solutions in Montreal and across Québec play an essential role both on the economic and the environmental fronts, effectively reducing our carbon footprint.
For example, the increase in traffic congestion has an impact on the transportation of merchandise and on people, and can lead to significant financial losses and delays. Fostering the use of public and active transit to get people to and fro and introducing electric commercial vehicle fleets are the kinds of projects that Jalon is deeply committed to and that require a collective effort.
Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: Jalon will continue to support and showcase Québec businesses that have innovation solutions when it comes to smart and sustainable mobility. We also offer guidance to businesses from all around the world that want to take advantage Montreal’s incredible assets to experiment with or develop their own smart and sustainable mobility projects. That’s why we continue to take part in various missions in Europe and the US to better share the expertise coming out of Montreal and how Jalon can help.
