JustLegal Is Changing The Way People And Lawyers Connect Online

JustLegal offers a suite of tools to help attorneys connect with clients online. The software upgrades law firms’ websites to be enable smart client intake, scheduling, and video conferencing. Of course this helps clients and people looking to connect with attorneys online too. The idea is to bring legal services into the 21st century and match consumer expectations while still protecting clients’ privacy and lawyers’ ethics. What JustLegal really hopes to do is get more citizens access to legal services, thus helping law firms serve more clients in the process. Below is our interview with Willy Ogorzaly, the Founder and CEO of JustLegal:

Q: Willy, what’s your startup story?

A: We started JustLegal when I needed to look for some legal information myself, and found it grossly underserved by internet search and digital communications. When I couldn’t find a clear answer online, I wanted to quickly video chat with a lawyer, but no website like that existed. The original vision for JustLegal was to connect people and lawyers online through secure video chat, but we’ve since realized how necessary it was to first address the inefficiencies around intake and scheduling. I gathered a team of experts on the technical and business sides, moved from Boulder to Austin where the mentor and investor ecosystem is larger, and set up shop at the Capital Factory Accelerator downtown. We are now about 10 employees, generating revenue both from law firm subscriptions and commissions on consultation bookings for people that connect with lawyers through our centralized directory on JustLegal.com. We’re having a lot of fun encountering the challenges of scale, architecture, customer-centricity, and product differentiation all at once!

Q: What are main benefits for attorneys?

A: Attorneys want to stay busy practicing the law, not lose time on lead generation, marketing, and administration, and they also don’t want to take a bunch of consultations with the wrong inquiries that aren’t going to become clients. A lawyer’s time is valuable and a solo practitioner’s time is in short-supply, so when it comes to free consultations, a streamlined intake and qualification process is key. Relationships that start with a smooth and quick intake also begin on a positive note and grow into happy clients. A lawyer’s website and intake experience is often their first impression to a client that finds them online. The other benefit of automating schedule management is more billable time. Our goal is to deliver modern excellence to an industry that sometimes feels old school and to match the consumer behaviors of how they shop for everything else. As the next generation of digital natives become not just the clients but the young attorneys, connecting online will be a mandatory foundation to building a successful practice.

Q: What are your plans for next 12 months?

A: We just finished replatforming from Ruby on Rails to Python and moving to an amazing system architecture we build with help from Rackspace at Amazon (AWS). We made these changes so developing and launching new features will be quicker and allow us to dynamically scale with our demand. We have partnerships brewing with state and local bar associations, so we picture our platform not only powering connections on our website and lawyer websites, but as the engine behind association directories as well as these bar sites. We’ll also improve our attorney reviewing system and add some intelligence to our search feature for when prospects don’t quite know the language for what they’re looking for. We’d like to hire more ex-attorneys for our client facing team (sales and customer success) who really know the networking landscape. Maybe make an office move as the team grows! Expand our directory to more geographies (right now our strengths are Colorado and Texas, where we have the most lawyers subscribed).
