Below is our recent interview with Adam Smith, Co-Founder at Kakaxi:

Adam Smith

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to Kakaxi?

A: In 2015, the Kakaxi concept was introduced as a way to connect people to their food and the process behind its production. Using time-lapse video and microclimate data collection, Kakaxi helps track production, predict yields, and minimize losses. The timelapse video from the Kakaxi device connects consumers to the farms and regions offering full product transparency and traceability.

Q: Can you give us insights into Kakaxi’s features?

A: Kakaxi is first technology platform to help consumers understand the story behind their food. The device collects and analyzes farm-focused weather data surrounding temperature, day length, humidity, and moisture conditions. Our smart-farming system provides consumers a gateway to the farm using time-lapse footage while tracking environmental conditions to help farmers make more informed decisions.

Internal sensors measure key micro-climate data points and take photos on an interval recording the seed to harvest story of plants. Farm data is delivered in three segments: micro-climate data for farms, timelapse video for consumer transparency, and images to AI & image recognition technology for logging key farm events.

The device is developed to work globally, with connection capabilities using 3G network in over 125 countries. With its ease of implementation and zero maintenance, Kakaxi technology has even been adapted to operate on remote coffee fields in Colombia and is being delivered worldwide to consumers by Nespresso Global Communications department.

Even overseas consumers can see where their coffee is coming from, who is growing it, and the process behind its production. .

Q: What type of customer would benefit the most from your product?

A: The Kakaxi platform services both sides of the supply chain, from producer to consumer. The device provides farmers with actionable insights, while creating value through transparency for corporations, agribusiness, distributors, certifiers, and CPG brands.

· The Connected Coffee campaign, launched in Colombia and Costa Rica, is aimed at bringing the great stories that are happening on Nespresso’s coffee fields to the world fueled by live data and timelapse video from the Kakaxi farm monitoring device.

· In Australia, we are building an integrated grain bunker storage monitoring plan in order to visualize, track, and remotely monitor highly remote storage bunker facilities. Using Kakaxi’s IoT capabilities, grain clients are increasing real-time visibility around product movements and site management.

Q: What’s the vision that guides you?

A: Web and smartphone mobility has created a world where information is no longer a luxury. At the touch of a button we can access virtually any information on every topic. Yet, in the age of information, industrial Ag and global distribution chains have created a scenario where we know very little about our food, where it comes from, and how it’s grown. Today, consumers want to know more and more. Research shows that consumers want to :

1> Be reassured that products are ethically and sustainably produced
2> Want to choose brands that make them feel good by knowing that they are good for others.

For brands and supermarkets, Kakaxi can help highlight sustainable sourcing of Key agricultural and raw materials. Using time-lapse video and farm to shelf connectivity, Kakaxi can help brands attract customers who matter the most and keep them engaged on the latest events by sharing real-time weather data and images of your where food comes from.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: We’ve lost what was once a close and personal relationship between farmers and our food. Today, we know so little about where our food grows, how it is grown and, most importantly, who grows it. But there’s a story to be told — one that can instill a new sense of understanding and appreciation for the food we consumed and most importantly, the environment from originated. We aim to increase the value of agriculture by sharing the process from planting to harvesting to consumers.
