Legacybox – A Mail-In Service To Have All Your Old Home Movies And Pictures Digitally Preserved

Listen to this article

Below is our recent interview with Nick Macco, the Founder of Legacybox:

Q: For those who haven’t heard of it, what is the best way to describe Legacybox?

A: Legacybox is a mail-in service to have all your old home movies and pictures digitally preserved. We connect people with the memories that matter most.

Q: What’s the story behind Legacybox? How did you start?

A: Legacybox started from the realization that our own childhood memories were stuck on old, aging media. We saw that nearly every family in America had the same problem, and we were all putting these most important life moments at risk. The answer was clear: digitize them. We began in a college garage advertising online, direct to the consumer, and have grown from there into the largest digitizing company in the world, helping nearly 750,000 families preserve millions of important home movies and countless pictures.

Q: You’ve recently donated $100,000 to insure memories against California wildfire threats; could you tell us something more?

A: Customers always tell us that if there was a natural disaster, the one thing they’d go back to their house for would be their recorded life moments. So when we saw what was happening in California, we thought donating a Legacybox to a family affected by this tragedy could be an incredibly meaningful way to help.

Q: What exactly can you digitize? How does it work?

A: We can digitize basically every consumer format someone might have. So all formats of vhs, videotape, and camcorder tapes, old film reels, both super 8 and 16mm, audio cassettes and audio reels, and prints, slides, and negatives.

It all starts when a customer orders a Legacybox kit based on the amount and types of media they have to digitize. That box is shipped to the customer along with a prepaid return shipping label to send it back to us. Then it is as simple as filling and sending your Legacybox back to us, filled with old home movies and photos. We receive it at our 52,000 square foot campus that is a temple to everything analog.

Once it arrives on the company’s campus, Legacybox’s team of professionals digitizes each item by hand and provides personalized updates at each step of the process. We have developed a proprietary system where each item is barcoded and tracked throughout the process keeping our customers updated from start to finish. When the full order is completed, customers receive their original media back, along with perfectly preserved copies of their choosing (thumb drive, the cloud or DVDs).

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: We are focused on growth and have only scratched the surface of the total media that needs to be digitally preserved. At our headquarters we employ more than 200 individuals, and are about to start hiring more in expectations of our biggest holiday season yet.

Q: What makes you proud about your company’s success?

A: We’re fast approaching helping 750,000 families futureproof their legacy and our customer service remains at or above 97% customer satisfaction rate.
