Q: Any highlights on your recent announcement?

A: Le Monde has ambitions to grow substantially and become a leading source of news and perspective for the world. To do that they had to transition from French only. As they started that journey, they encountered what so many companies do — the lack of bandwidth for their internal reviewers. They realized they needed to partner to add the capacity and scale needed to be a global leader.

Just two language service providers were awarded this high-profile work by Le Monde, managing large translation volumes for the newspaper that require high quality at speed, sending them to the Le Monde editorial offices in Paris and Los Angeles for final approval. Specifically looking for partners in the US with experience in media localization, a background in MTPE (Machine Translation Post Editing) and experience connecting to internal systems and processes. Lionbridge was a great fit for all three.

Outsourcing gave tens of hours back to reporters who could be working on the next article, allowing for shorter turnaround times for both translation and news stories.

Q: What is the best thing about your company that people might not know about?

A: Few people know that machine translation, which is basically AI for language, is one of the original uses of artificial intelligence and machine learning. In 1953 the first words ever translated using MT were Russian chemistry terms to demonstrate the art of the possible. That makes the language industry one of the oldest, and most experienced with AI of any industry, even high tech!

Even fewer people know that Lionbridge was the first language services provides to deploy and use for commercial localization. We were the first, and we have trained close to 3000 MT engines. No one has more experience with MT, has more professionally translated words in their corpus to train the engines, or has used MT in more industries, applications, and mediums than Lionbridge. We were even the first to use our linguistic AI knowledge to help develop search engines in languages other than English!

Q: What can we expect from your company in the next 6 months? What are your plans?

A: Lionbridge will further exploit AI to enable companies to localize everything within the same—or even smaller—budget. Only by localizing everything, can companies profoundly accelerate their ability to expand globally and strengthen customer interactions.
