Q: What’s the difference between B2B & B2C marketing under GDPR?

A: GDPR is a law that aims to protect data privacy of individual EU citizens, though it makes no distinction between B2B and B2C marketing activities. As it stands, a professional email address is classified as personal data under GDPR. Therefore, any collection, processing and storage of professional contacts and email addresses in the form of cold email campaigns without lawful bases could be subjected to GDPR prosecution.

However, each country can enforce these rules differently, and there may be some nuances across borders. For instance, in the UK, the difference between B2B and B2C marketing comes from the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) and not GDPR. PECR is a UK law derived from the ePrivacy Directive that focuses on protections for consumers. Marketing to corporate employees via electronic channels does not currently require consent under PECR. Therefore, ICO’s interpretation is clearly favorable for B2B marketers. Whereas, Germany has taken the strictest interpretation of the GDPR laws and require opt-in consent in all cases. This will make it difficult for B2B marketers to justify data processing with legitimate interest.

Q: Is less more in content marketing?

A: When it comes to content our mantra is simple: “Quality over quantity”. We always aim for high quality content that adds value by answering questions that we know our audience is asking.

Smart content marketing requires planning. Our goal is to produce high quality content that not only offers immediate value to our consistent readers, but also contributes to the larger brand story we are trying to tell. Sometimes more content is desirable when it helps reach a new audience in new ways, such as repurposing an ebook for a webinar, or a blog post into a podcast. On the flipside, less is more when you find yourself repeating the same message, to the same people, in the same medium over and over again. If your audience is bored or find that they are not learning anything new, they will not return.

Q: I see you have an API. What made you take that direction, and what applications have you seen evolve from that offering?

A: Mailjet has had an API from day one. Our own interface is build using our API, and this means that anyone can build on top of it to customize their email platform. For example, to build their own stats dashboard with statistics pulled from other apps they use (for example multichannel apps). We wanted everything to be possible for our users, so they can have the power to connect to the tools they want and need, to be independent and empowered to create. The decision was easy. APIs give individuals and companies the power to add functionality to a website, application, platform, or software without having to actually write the code. We needed something that would give us the power and space to grow and be reliable all the way and there it was.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: Mailjet’s mission is to be the leading email service provider for teams, which is why this September we will be releasing our Collaboration Toolkit which is a set of new features designed to make it easier and faster for teams to collaborate on email creation. The intuitiveness and speed users have come to expect from collaboration tools like Google Docs, such as live multi-user editing, and commenting, will now be in your emails. We will also be rolling out industry leading team features like: role management, which allows teams to define permissions to increase productivity and ensure brand consistency; version control to ensure that you never lose a great idea from your team members; and user tracking to monitor what changes were made. In all, this new Collaboration Toolkit will make Mailjet the top email service provider for teams.
