Q: How did you come up to the idea of Marketplacer in the first place?

A: The whole project grew out of BikeExchange. When Jason Wyatt and Sam Salter first started BikeExchange, back then they were two kids millennials with ideas far greater than their available funds. It was a completely boot-strapped organization which grew organically. It wasn’t long before people started saying ‘BikeExchange is a great idea, can we do this for babies and kids, or home-improvement etc.’ Knowing there wasn’t enough funding to scale into three, four or five different verticals, Jason and Sam then engaged in joint ventures to fund rapid expansion.

In 2013, Jason and Sam partnered with smart entrepreneurs who were talented, hungry and could go into each of their markets with the expertise they had brought to BikeExchange. By 2017, Marketplacer was operating in 9 countries, had tested the model in a multitude of tax regimes and with different products. The business has now transitioned to a SaaS model, licensing technology to globally construct a community of people creating their own marketplaces. Marketplacer can empower anyone to build marketplaces at an incredibly fast-pace and to a world-class standard. Anywhere, any product, any service, anywhere in the world — that’s their mantra. Q: What is an online marketplace?

A: Throughout history, marketplaces have been integral to communities- a common place where buyers and sellers meet, where information is exchanged and relationships are developed.

Online marketplaces work in exactly the same way, except that communities typically share an area of interest, rather than a geographic location.

Marketplaces provide consumers with a greater choice of products, increased convenience and lower prices. Sellers, meanwhile, can access a much larger group of potential customers without holding stock on the shelf and they benefit from the technical infrastructure that the marketplace itself provides such as stock display and payment processing.

Q: What can we expect from Marketplacer in the future?

A: Marketplacer is a new business. We are ten years old, but we are a new business. We have reinvented ourselves three or four times already. I think we will continue to invest in reinventing ourselves — be that big-data or an insights business.
