Listen to this article

Below is our recent interview with Iain Stenhouse and some of the people at Apocalypse Studios:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to Apocalypse Studios?

A: Sure! Apocalypse Studios is a video game company based out of the Niagara Region in Ontario, Canada. We opened our doors in Jan 2018 by Denis Dyack, the creator of Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem and Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. We are dedicated to exploring bold new landscapes for games. We are doing this by studying the current medium of video games and partnering with several innovative technologies through Amazon, AMD, Project Deios, Modulate, and others. We are currently working on the title Deadhaus Sonata.

Q: Can you tell us something more about Modulate?

A: Modulate is a startup company building the world’s first emotive voice skinning technology. Using Modulate’s technology, one can talk and have their voice transformed into a different voice real-time. In Deadhaus Sonata, players will be able to match their sound in chat to the unique characters of Deadhaus’ world, or use their voices to create something entirely new! This will allow gamers to really step into the shoes of their characters and immerse themselves into Deadhaus Sonata.

Q: What types of games do you develop?

A: Right now we’re developing Deadhaus Sonata. Deadhaus Sonata is a Narrative Driven Action RPG where you play the Undead fighting the living. An unstoppable force from Deadhaus, you are a monster among men, dealing death and destruction on a massive scale. Key focuses of Deadhaus Sonata is the world and narrative that you usually don’t find in these kinds of games. We like to build games that really take advantage of the medium.

Q: What are you most excited about in the industry at the moment and what future trends are you expecting to see?

A: The Medium is the Message and the Message has changed in the video games industry. We see three major trends that have combined that are completely revolutionizing the medium of video games.

1. The emergence of the Free To Play (F2P). In 2018 F2P games now account for over 86% of all global game revenue (source Netzoo). F2P games are a win for the consumer as they all gamers to “try before they buy” while also offering a superior economic model for game developers enabling us to work hand in hand with our community to make the best game possible.

2. Community Driven Content. The vast number of gamers has now reached a tipping point where the community can significantly contribute to the game and improve it from the content perspective. We believe that gamers are key to success because they can significantly contribute to the quality of all aspects of games: world-building, narrative, game design and much more. Apocalypse is providing the tools and a platform for gamers to create content to create content for Deadhaus Sonata and make the game the best it can be. This is a brave new world and we are happy to dive into this new blue ocean of potential.

3. Deep Social Media Integration. More people will watch a League of Legends championship than the Super Bowl via Twitch and other social media platforms. Social media platforms allow spectators agency to the point where the people watching can affect the gaming experience beyond the traditional medium of film and TV. Deadhaus Sonata intends to bring gamers back to the days of the early Greek plays at an amphitheater where the spectators could affect the story, plot and have a significant effect on the experience by giving them the ability to change the instance of the game they are watching and overall meta world.

If you look are our current partners, they are the best in the world to take advantage of the new trends in the video game industry. This is why Apocalypse is working with companies like Amazon and Modulate. Amazon Game Tech and Lumber are built from the ground up to take advantage of this sea change in the medium of video games. Modular, cloud integration, deep social media integration potential with Amazon AWS suite gives Apocalypse a significant tools and has changed the way we think about making video games. Modulate is offering ways gamers can profoundly change the way gamers interact with each other which is exactly where Apocalypse wants to Deadhaus Sonata to be.

Q: What are the company’s plans and goals for the future?

A: The way we’re approaching development is a little different than you’d normally see in the video game industry in that we want to take fans and gamers along for the journey of creating the game with us. That started by us showing the very first prototype (warts and all!) that we had made and we’re showing updates as we move through pre-development and development.

Ideally, we’d like to release some of our prototype versions of the game out to our community to actually play, so we’re looking into what’s possible with that and maybe we’ll have something to announce soon on that front.

From there we’re looking forward to having the first version of Deadhaus Sonata released and then moving to grow the game and the community for many years to come – we have lots of ideas and plans of where this game could grow for many years after initial release in both gameplay and narrative, so the plan is that this is something that we want to support and grow for a long time.
