Meet MenuSano – Nutrition Analysis, Food Labeling, And Compliance Platform Designed For The Food Industry

Listen to this article

Below is our recent interview with Sonia Couto, the Founder of MenuSano:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to your company?

A: MenuSano is a nutrition analysis, food labelling, recipe management, and compliance platform designed specifically for the food industry. We help restaurants, food manufacturers, healthcare organizations, schools, meal delivery companies, and foodservice operators simplify complex food data management while improving transparency and compliance.

We support compliance across three jurisdictions, the US FDA, Canadian CFIA, and the UK’s Food Standards Agency, making us one of the very few platforms at our price point that covers all three markets in a single tool.

What began as a nutrition analysis solution has evolved into a comprehensive food intelligence platform supporting nutrition analysis, recipe costing, food labelling, regulatory compliance, dietary management, and allergen intelligence.

Our mission is simple: make food information more accurate, accessible, and actionable for both businesses and consumers.

Q: What makes you the best choice? How are you unique?

A: Many software companies focus on one specific problem, such as nutrition analysis, labelling, or recipe management. MenuSano is a tech company, and we wanted to build a solution that connects all these functions within a single ecosystem.

What makes us unique is that we don’t simply generate labels and reports. We understand the relationships between ingredients, recipes, dishes, sub-recipes, custom ingredients, labels, allergens, nutrients, and regulatory requirements.

This foundation allowed us to recently launch AI Allergens, a proprietary allergen intelligence engine built directly into MenuSano. Unlike generic AI tools that rely primarily on prompts and publicly available information, AI Allergens operates within MenuSano’s proprietary food intelligence framework, analyzing ingredient relationships, recipe dependencies, and allergen inheritance across complex food operations.

We also offer full customization. Unlike competitors who lock you into rigid templates, MenuSano allows complete flexibility, full workflow designs, features, API capabilities, and management tools tailored to how your business actually operates.

We believe the future of food technology is not just artificial intelligence. It is intelligent food data.

Q: Who is your ideal client and why?

A: Our ideal clients are organizations that create and manage food information at scale and recognize that accuracy matters.

This includes food manufacturers and operators, restaurants and restaurant groups, food brands and packaged goods companies, healthcare facilities, long-term care organizations, schools and universities, meal delivery companies, registered dietitians and nutritionists, and government and institutional foodservice providers.

These organizations face growing pressure to provide accurate nutrition, allergen, and labelling information while navigating increasingly complex regulatory requirements. MenuSano helps simplify those challenges through automation, centralized data management, and food intelligence tools.

Q: What can we expect from you in the next 6 months? What are your plans?

A: The launch of AI Allergens is just one step in a broader vision for the future of food intelligence.

Over the next six months, we will continue expanding our allergen intelligence capabilities, enhancing automation throughout the platform, and introducing new tools that help organizations better understand and manage food data. We’re also expanding our country databases and knowledge base, deepening compliance technologies, ingredient intelligence, reporting, and workflow automation, all designed to help our customers reduce manual work while improving accuracy and transparency.

Our goal is to become the leading food intelligence platform for organizations that create, manage, label, and analyze food data.

We’re also investing in brand awareness, sharing expertise on food regulation, allergen safety, and compliance as a responsibility rather than just a checkbox. We believe the food industry deserves better tools and better information, and we intend to be a leading voice in that conversation.

Q: What is the best thing about your company that people might not know about?

A: Our customers have shaped what MenuSano has become.

MenuSano’s founder built something unique, a Customer Board. A dedicated space that allows our enterprise customers to be active participants in the product roadmap. “We are a tech company, and we want to build features that are valuable to our customers. But through conversations with our customers, I realized some of the features we were planning were just cool things to build, and our customers had no use for them. The board was created to understand the real challenges the food industry is facing, and to build tools and features alongside our customers that solve those challenges. Not just AI prompting tools that look cool.”

We didn’t build this product in isolation. Every major feature, from multi-country label support, to the API, to the AI Allergen Detector, recipe costing, and wellness analyzer, came from listening closely to the people using the platform and the problems they were trying to solve. Our enterprise customers have been genuine partners in the product’s development.

The other thing people might not know is the breadth of who uses MenuSano. People assume we serve restaurants, and we do, but on any given day, our platform is being used by a dietitian in Vancouver analyzing a client’s meal plan, a food startup in London preparing for a UK retail launch, a culinary instructor in Ontario teaching CFIA compliance to future chefs, and a national restaurant chain in the US updating their allergen disclosures ahead of a regulatory deadline.

Our expertise in food transparency and compliance is not limited to software development. MenuSano was the nutrition analysis platform used during Ontario’s DineSafe (formerly Healthy Menu Choices Act) pilot initiatives that contributed to the province’s menu labelling legislation. Working alongside public health and industry stakeholders provided us with firsthand insight into the practical challenges food businesses face when navigating regulatory requirements, and those learnings continue to influence how we build our platform today.

At the end of the day, our technology isn’t really about software. It’s about helping organizations provide safer, more transparent food experiences for the people they serve. We built one platform that serves all of them. That’s something we’re genuinely proud of.

“The food industry doesn’t need more software. It needs better information. Everything we build at MenuSano starts with that belief.”
