Mimosa Networks Is Eliminating The Global Connectivity Gap Through Disruptive 5G Fixed Broadband Wireless Solutions

Listen to this article

Mimosa Networks is one of the leading companies in next-generation, Hybrid Fiber-Wireless fixed access broadband solutions. Mimosa access, backhaul, and client devices empower service providers to deliver ultra-broadband connectivity in suburban, urban, and hard-to-reach rural areas at a fraction of the cost of fiber, driving new industry competition and closing the global connectivity gap. Mimosa’s technology demonstrates unprecedented levels of efficiency, sharing scarce spectrum concurrently across an entire network. Founded in 2012, Mimosa is based in Silicon Valley and deployed in over 130 countries worldwide.

Below is our interview with Jaime Fink, Chief Product Officer and Co-founder of Mimosa Networks:

Jaime Fink Co-founder - ‎Mimosa Networks

Q: Can you give us more insights into your 5G Fixed wireless solutions?

A: The 5G Fixed wireless opportunity is huge—high-density cities, poorly-connected suburbs, and streaming video are driving incredible demand, and rural communities are ripe for fiber-fast internet after struggling with intermittent, low-speed access for years. The high cost of fiber-to-the-home and the declining share of internet traffic carried over mobile networks has reinvigorated demand for a disruptive alternative in fixed broadband. In the US, over 80% of the population lives in cities or suburbs, and incredibly, over half of those areas have only one ISP option for high-speed internet.

Mimosa is reinventing internet access with disruptive 5G Fixed broadband wireless, eliminating costs and deployment delays that halted fiber to the home (FTTH) deployments by traditional ISPs. Traditionally, fixed wireless filled a vital role in the connectivity gap, but only in rural areas with no internet access. Servicing high density urban and suburban markets with wireless broadband failed due to extremely limited spectrum that became quickly exhausted when scaling to highly populated areas.

In 2017, Mimosa delivered on our vision with solutions to boost speed and coverage in rural markets, and critical spectrum reuse technologies to scale in suburban/urban markets, allowing competitive ISPs, local utility companies, and municipalities to establish themselves as an alternative to the monolithic, monopolistic wireline connection. They leverage low-cost fiber where it is available, extending connections via wireless to users for 1/10th the cost of traditional fiber to the home – we call this Hybrid Fiber Wireless architecture. Mimosa enables extreme low-cost approaches in developing markets, delivering in mass with Wi-Fi to smartphones, as well as single family homes and multi-dwelling housing units with the fastest possible Return on Investment (ROI) under 12 months. This low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is reinvigorating broadband investment globally. Mimosa is quickly disrupting the established DSL and FTTH mentality, introducing necessary connectivity and competition that consumers desire.

Fixed wireless technology offers a fantastic opportunity to recreate the healthy conditions to once again stimulate broad growth. With Mimosa 5G Fixed wireless solutions, ROI can be delivered in 6-12 months in most global markets. With more competition created in the marketplace, consumers are not limited to a single service provider and the debate over net neutrality could become redundant – with the pressure on each ISP to offer fair, consistent service to all.

Q: What advantage does Mimosa have over its competitors?

A: While some 5G industry players favor millimeter wave solutions for the larger swaths of spectrum, these higher frequencies suffer massive performance degradation when they hit trees and moving vehicles within 500 feet of a home. Residential environments pose challenging and often unpredictable physical obstacles that impede wireless signals.

Mimosa favors deploying solutions in lower, sub-6 GHz spectrum. But with less spectrum available, efficient spectrum reuse techniques are critical to achieve scale. While Mimosa’s Spectrum Reuse Synchronization (SRS) technology is spectrum-agnostic, when deployed in these lower frequencies, Mimosa’s solutions expand residential fixed wireless opportunities compared to millimeter wave solutions that struggle in near- and non-line-of-sight areas.

Mimosa is a member of the NTCA Rural Broadband Association, the Rural Wireless Association (RWA), the Wireless Internet Service Providers Association (WISPA), and the UK Wireless Internet Service Providers Association (UKWISPA). In addition to winning the Mobile Breakthrough Award, Mimosa recently won TMC’s 2017 Communications Solutions Product of the Year Award and the Red Herring “Top 100 Company” Award.

Q: What geographic markets are you focusing on currently?

A: Mimosa has customers and partners worldwide.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: While many technology companies are focused on various internet applications, Mimosa is unique because we’re one of the only startups focusing on fixing and improving the foundational infrastructure of the internet itself.

Mimosa has received numerous awards from the service provider community who recognize our disruptive technologies. We’ve delivered on our vision of a wireless last mile years ahead of the mainstream cellular market, while the fiber industry has systemically failed as incumbents walk back their deployment commitments.

Mimosa’s extremely experienced founders bucked the market perception, confident that wireless is the only way forward globally for cost-effective broadband connectivity. We will continue to be the driving force behind a new era of connectivity that will stimulate the broader technology industry that is dependent on incredible, competitive internet access.
