Listen to this article

Mobile Labs provides an enterprise-grade mobile device cloud solution, deviceConnect that improves efficiency and raises quality for agile-based, cross-platform mobile app and mobile web deployments and testing. deviceConnect provides affordable, highly-secure access to a large inventory of mobile devices across major mobile platforms enabling mobile developers, testers, and quality assurance professionals increased agility and flexibility. To find out more about Mobile Labs and deviceConnect, we sat down with Dan McFall, President of Mobile Labs.

Dan McFall

Q: Dan, can you tell us more about deviceConnect?

A: deviceConnect is our flagship enterprise mobility solution that is available on-premises or as a hosted solution. It provides a completely secure approach to device management, access and testing. As a mobile device cloud platform, we consider deviceConnect to be the core, or the heart, of a mobile app delivery infrastructure that enables automated continuous quality integration, DevOps processes, automated testing, and manual app, web, or device testing on managed, real devices for mobile developers, testers, and quality assurance. At Mobile Labs, we are adamant that enterprise mobility teams test on real devices to get the best idea of how a particular mobile app or mobile website will actually behave on a certain device or operating system in the real world.

One of the most important features of deviceConnect is that it provides secure, comprehensive management of mobile devices, users, and apps from one central console. This means that enterprise mobility teams who are in different offices or even in different countries can have 24×7 remote access to devices from anywhere. deviceConnect resonates with enterprise mobility professionals because it supports the entire mobile app lifecycle and brings new levels of speed and quality to the enterprise digital transformation in a cost-effective, secure environment that provides agility and boosts DevOps across the organization.

Q: Who are your customers and how does deviceConnect boost DevOps and agility?

A: Our clients include Fortune 500 companies around the world, primarily in the financial, banking, insurance and telecommunications/media industries. Companies that provide robust mobile app or mobile websites to customers or to internal stakeholders need a solution like deviceConnect to manage device access and testing.

Mobile Labs’ customers rely on deviceConnect because of its ease of use in helping organizations manage and provide instant, remote access to devices. This solution meets teams ‘where they live’ by enabling manual testing app management, continuous integration, and continuous automated testing with the most popular tools available today. Customers can choose the convenience and flexibility of an on-premises installation or can leverage our hosted solution where our team of experts manage devices in our hosted cloud environment.

Q: Why is a test automation tool so important?

A: The world of mobility moves fast and is constantly changing. Enterprise mobility teams are under increased pressure to release more mobile apps and mobile websites faster than ever. With this trend in mind, mobile developers, testers and quality assurance teams need to be able to test across multiple devices to make sure the mobile experience is consistent across devices and operating systems.

Traditionally, teams have relied on manual testing, which depending on resources, can often extend the testing process. To increase speed and to release more updates faster than ever, enterprise mobility teams are embracing automated mobile testing. There are many tools available today for automated testing such as Appium, MicroFocus’ UFT, and Tricentis Tosca that teams rely on for testing. By pairing test automation tools with a solution like deviceConnect teams can run tests across multiple devices faster and more efficiently. As an added bonus, deviceConnect is tool-agnostic and supports the majority of the top open-source and commercial automation tools.

When choosing the right tool for test automation, enterprise mobility teams should consider internal resources and the skill set of testers and quality assurance professionals to make sure the tool is a good fit for the team.

Q: On the subject of test automation, can you talk to us about Mobile Labs’ World-Class Appium Support?

A: Our team at Mobile Labs is focused on offering world-class Appium support to our customers. Appium is an open-source test automation framework for mobile app and mobile website testing that is increasingly popular in the industry. We began expanding our Appium support last year by adding a built-in Appium server to deviceConnect. By leveraging the built-in Appium server, enterprise mobility professionals can skip building Appium servers in-house and avoid installing additional software. This enables teams to quickly get up and running and testing with Appium.

We are continuing to add new features to make working with Appium even easier. We just released Appium Inspector, a new built-in feature that is an extension of deviceConnect’s built-in Appium server. With Appium Inspector, mobile testers can easily identify objects in mobile apps or on websites running in a mobile browser when writing test scripts. Our team will continue to add more features throughout 2018 to enhance our Appium support for deviceConnect customers using Appium for test automation.

Q: You’ve recently been shortlisted for the 2017-2018 Cloud Awards Program; could you tell us something more?

A: Our team is very excited about being shortlisted for the Cloud Awards Program. Clearly, when it comes to deviceConnect we are on the right track for helping our customers solve pressing enterprise mobility challenges.

As always, we take the feedback of our customers seriously when planning our future roadmap for deviceConnect. We recently launched a feedback portal where customers can provide ideas for future enhancements and vote on the suggestions of their peers. Our product management and customer success teams continuously monitor this forum and provide real-time feedback. At Mobile Labs, we are committed to our customers and their success and what better way to make sure that deviceConnect is providing the support needed than by asking our customers?

For enterprise mobility teams that may be interested in seeing how a solution like deviceConnect can help reduce testing times, boost DevOps and make device sharing easier, we invite you to check out our customer success stories and eBooks.
