Q: How did the idea behind Newpass come about?
A: The motivation for creating Newpass came from working with less technical friends and family. As more and more of their interactions move to the web and mobile devices they struggle with managing multiple passwords for all of their services. The goal was to build an authentication system that removes the hassle of passwords but doesn’t sacrifice security. Also, as a developer I hate building login screens, password resets, and all the other pieces that come along with rolling your own authentication system.

Q: Could you explain how does it work?
A: Newpass is designed to be oAuth for SMS and MMS. You direct the users to a personalized login URL and once they’ve verified their identify via SMS, MMS, or email they are directed back to your application along with an authentication token. You can then use that token to retrieve the user’s information from the Newpass system. You can think of it like “Logging in with Facebook”, but with your mobile device.
We’ve also added in some basic user profile management features that allow you to store custom profile information for your app within the Newpass system.

Q: What was the biggest challenge during development process?
A: The biggest challenge has been testing the system against international phone numbers (outside of the US). We’ve built custom testing tools and we’re slowly adding new countries as we go.
Q: Who do you see as your primary target audience?
A: Newpass is aimed at developers that want to provide a secure method of authentication without the headache of usernames and passwords. Newpass also provides a platform for 2-factor authentication if passwords are a requirement of a developers application. We feel that adoption of password-less authentication will increase if it’s driven from the development end.

Q: What is your main goal at the moment?
A: At the moment we are focused on improving the core product based on the feedback we’ve received from our early adopters. As we move forward we have some other small SMS based applications geared towards developers that we will be releasing.
