Below is our recent interview with Steven Umbehocker, CEO at OSNEXUS:

Q: Tell us about the early days of OSNEXUS. What were the biggest challenges?

A: In 2010 when the company was founded, OSNEXUS was comprised of a small team of engineers dedicated to developing an SDS platform that filled in the missing gaps in the storage industry. We were lucky enough to get our foot in the door with IBM early on, where we started selling our software platform in their SoftLayer marketplace (now IBM Cloud).

The biggest hurdle we overcame as OSNEXUS grew was the lack of customer input in the first year which meant there was little feedback to go on when building the product. It was risky because we didn’t know if the platform was a fit for the market yet. After the first year, we started to get some customer and community traction and feedback. Now 9 years in, OSNEXUS is working hard to keep up with all of the customer requests, which is great.

Q: How much effort do you put into the security of QuantaStor? We’ve heard about some new features coming up in that area, could you tell us something more?

A: Security is of utmost importance to OSNEXUS because we are trusted by industries with special security and compliance requirements, such as finance, government, and healthcare. QuantaStor SDS complies with NIST, HIPAA, CJIS, and GDPR through a number of advanced security features including Role-based Access Controls, end-to-end security and encryption, audit logging, data scrubbing, and more.

One of QuantaStor’s newest security features is Multi-factor Authentication (MFA). MFA allows users to log into the platform securely with multiple authentication methods to verify their identity, such as a text message, push notification, and phone call. QuantaStor integrates with Duo Security to ensure effective, strong MFA technology and inspects all devices used to access QuantaStor SDS at the time of access to determine trustworthiness.

Another new security feature in QuantaStor is Secure Log Collection. QuantaStor now automatically scrubs names, emails, and other security related and Personally Identifiable Information (PII) from a given log collection before it is encrypted and sent to OSNEXUS. This ensures that no sensitive information leaves the organization in the event of a log collection due to an issue with the storage system.

Q: Tell us more about your advanced storage grid technology. What makes it unique?

A: QuantaStor SDS was designed with advanced storage grid technology which enables QuantaStor storage appliances to be linked together and remotely managed as a single unit. This grid technology eliminates the complexity that historically has burdened storage administrators of traditional storage solutions. Rather than having to manage the security, maintenance and monitoring of storage systems one by one, the grid technology makes it easy to manage huge multi-site storage environments with a heterogeneous mix of hardware.

With QuantaStor’s grid technology, IT administrators can link together a mix of local and remote appliances into a grid and then fully automate operations via the QuantaStor REST API and CLI. API call routing to the correct storage appliance is automatically handled by the storage grid so administrators can use the REST API, CLI and web management interface through any appliance in a storage grid to manage and monitor all appliances in a given storage grid.

Q: How do you help organizations meet the High-Performance Computing (HPC) scalability challenges?

A: With QuantaStor’s new scalability enhancements, each QuantaStor appliance can now efficiently manage up to 500 devices, up from 200 devices in v4.4. Using high-capacity 12TB NL-SAS HDDs devices, this enables QuantaStor storage appliances to manage up to 6PB of storage per pair of appliances and over 100PB of storage per storage grid. QuantaStor’s advanced HA failover system is highly parallelized to ensure reliable, secure, and fast failover of storage pools large and small.

QuantaStor SDS provides High-Performance Computing storage capabilities to scale up and out with its grid architecture, for increased I/O and capacity requirements. Leveraging open source file systems and protocols including NFS, CIFS, SMB, iSCSI, and ZFS, QuantaStor allows fast access to large file, block, and object storage across multiple nodes for fast and efficient pure performance, dedicated computational scratch or multi-petabyte result set storage applications. This all supports HPC applications such as big data, rich media, weather forecasting, 3D computer modelling, seismic data processing and data mining, or large-scale simulations.

Q: What are the key features of QuantaStor SDS HPC?

A: With overall grid scalability to 64 appliances, QuantaStor SDS for HPC can combine any number of network shares into any number of unique Global Namespaces so that storage grids can deliver consistent performance, accessibility, and reliability as HPC environments scale. QuantaStor SDS object storage configurations enable organizations to deploy cost-effective, hyper-scale storage for HPC workloads using the S3 and/or SWIFT REST based protocols. Object storage provides data intensive HPC applications with the ability to scale to 64 petabytes and appliances across HPC clusters. QuantaStor SDS can be deployed on any hardware one chooses including all-flash or hybrid configurations. Divide up and move storage between network shares and pools of storage that are all-flash or a hybrid mix of SSD and HDD for high performance and high capacity storage.

Q: What’s next for OSNEXUS? Do you have plans to grow, expand or diversify?

A: OSNEXUS is dedicated to advancing the scalability of QuantaStor SDS to better serve the needs of industries like HPC that require increasingly astronomical amounts of storage. We consider ourselves the Hyperscale Storage Provider and are constantly advancing our grid technology and scalability to reach into the PB+ range of storage for our customers.
