Shopping Video Startup Packagd Plans To Reinvent The Mobile Shopping Experience

Packagd aims to help consumers easily discover and buy products through their innovative mobile platform. Packagd takes advantage of the popular unboxing and product review videos to offer an engaging user experience.

Q: You’ve recently announced $6 Million in Series A Round; could you tell us something more?

A: Our Series A investment for Packagd was led by Forerunner Ventures and GV (formerly Google Ventures), bringing our total funding to $7.5 million. The company was first incubated at Kleiner Perkins, the firm in which I am also a general partner.

Q: What is the story behind Packagd, how did you start?

A: I’ve been working in online video for more than a decade and have always thought there was an opportunity for video to play an important role in commerce. And in recent years, the unboxing trend has become a real phenomenon — three out of top 10 most viewed YouTube channels host unboxing videos, and there are about a billion estimated views of unboxing videos each month. The trend has exploded and we think now is the perfect time to leverage popular unboxing video content to help consumers discover and buy more seamlessly.

Q: How do you improve mobile shopping experience?

A: Shopping around video in a social setting is a timeless consumer behavior — QVC and HSN have turned into a combined $11B annual revenue. We believe that consumers want to a more engaging, social and fun experience when making purchases online. Which is why the experience on ur platform will host a family of apps that enable you to watch curated shows from content creators you love, interact with them in real-time, and then have the ability purchase the products directly and securely without leaving the app. It’s really all about product discovery and entertainment.

Q: What makes you unique in the market?

A: We are curating top videos into shows and building a community and mobile shopping experience around them. Also, with live “hosts” for our shows, we’re creating a more engaging experience for users.

Q: Tell us something more about your Unboxed application?

A: Unboxed is the first of our family of apps targeting a key retail vertical: technology. You’ll find live programming and curated videos from popular unboxing stars with millions of social media followers such as Austin Evans, Dom Esposito, and Chris Denker (DenkOps). It’s currently available for download in the Apple App Store.

We were recently at E3 in LA showing off Unboxed with content from the show floor, and gave away a Nintendo Switch at the end to one of the viewers in the app — the buzz and excitement around what we’re doing has been tremendous!
