Q: How did you turn your inspiration into a product? What is Phrasee’s startup story?

A: I had been working in the email business for a while, and always wondered why one subject line worked, and why another didn’t. But, aside from gut feel, there wasn’t much more I could do!

Dr Neil Yager, with whom I studied computer science about 20 years ago, and I were going to a gig in Camden Town, London, and got chatting. He’s got a PhD in computer science and is probably the smartest guy I know. Anyway, after a few pints, we thought – what if we combined my knowledge of the email space, with his knowledge of artificial intelligence?

We prototyped our first alpha, and while the product worked, it looked like Fisher Price My First Website. So, I called up my old friend Victoria Peppiatt – who was running a creative agency at the time – and pitched her. Within 30 seconds she said, “LET’S DO IT!” She’s an expert in branding and UI design… and joined us as our 3rd co-founder.

Since launching commercially on Feb 23 2015, we’ve gone from strength to strength. It’s not always easy, but we run our business with a simple mantra: “Be awesome in everything we do, in life and in business.”

Q: How does Phrasee work?

A: Phrasee uses artificial intelligence to generate marketing language that out-performs humans. Then, it learns from response metrics to continuously and progressively optimise results using advanced machine learning algorithms.

It’s simple to use, but the stuff that’s going on behind the scenes is hard. In essence, users log into our platform and generate a set of subject lines, calls to action, or longer-form copy. They then use 3rd party tools to test out the variants. The response metrics are fed back into Phrasee, and our super intelligent machine-optimisation algorithms run with the ball.

A lot of people, when we first started, didn’t believe that a machine could write better than a human. Well, we’ve proven that Phrasee can – and this is evidenced by the fact that our copy out-performs human-written control variants over 95% of the time. Awesome!

Q: You’ve recently announced a $1.32 million seed funding; what’s your next step?

A: Scale, in terms of product and territory. Our investors, including Next15 and Galvanise Capital, are experts in the digital marketing arena. So with their expertise working alongside us, we’re super stoked about the future. You’ll be hearing a lot more about Phrasee in the coming weeks, months and years – because what we do is innovative, effective… and awesome.

Q: What’s the best thing about Phrasee that people might not know about?

A: Every time we sign a new client, we have a special dance that we do, while singing Phrasee’s theme song. See, I’ve worked at boring jobs before where there was no culture, no fun, nothing awesome. And I didn’t found Phrasee to be just another boring company. We’ve built up some awesome traditions already, and that’s why our team loves working with us!

Q: What are your main goals for the next 6 months?

A: Simply put, we want to get the message out more! MarTech is such a cluttered marketplace, with a million companies doing a million things. What we do, though, truly is different. So the next 6 months we’re going to be shouting, and shouting loud, about what Phrasee can do – because there is nothing else like it on the planet!
