Think – UI for AI. A user-friendly interface that allows a domain expert the ability to fit their perspective and context on to the algorithm, what they call a ‘lens’. Then the lensed algorithm analyses large amounts of text data and presents relevant information from the domain expert’s perspective. The company is augmenting a human’s intelligence with computing power. Below is our interview with Birago Jones, CEO and Co-founder of Pienso:
Q: You’ve recently announced $2.1 Million Seed funding round; could you tell us something more?
A: We are excited to have these incredible investors and plan on using the funding to scale operations.
Our origin story:
My friend and co-founder, Karthik Dinakar and I were working on using machine learning to address teen cyberbullying on social networks while we were graduate students at MIT in 2010. During that process, we learned some incredible insights.
After graduation, Karthik and I always talked about creating a company together but felt the timing wasn’t right and pursued other endeavors. Last year, we decided to take the plunge and start Pienso, the past several months have been an exhilarating whirlwind, but we are so excited to have these incredible investors are looking forward to growing Pienso.

Q: How exactly do you plan to bring AI to everyone?
A: For us, the first step is to make the machine training and learning process more accessible, and developing a user-friendly interface is essential to making this happen. Empowering knowledge workers and domain experts that have no computer science or advanced mathematics degree to participate in training machine learning models is vital.
Q: Why is now the time for a technology solution like Pienso?
A: I’ll give three main reasons:
1. Computing and processing power is so much better, faster and affordable.
2. There is an enormous amount of data generated by the second.
3. The market is ready and in need of these new technologies.
There is so much data created and sifting out what is helpful and what is noise is a challenge. A person’s perspective, expertise, and intent matter in deciding what is useful. That’s why it’s essential to have the domain expert train the machine, they understand the nuance and can better instruct the model.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: We see Pienso as a horizontal enabling technology that can support many industries.We plan to create more tools to empower users creativity to build viable solutions.
